Looking for new writers

$
0
0

Update: The response has been overwhelming so far! I'm starting to look at the applications now and will probably be sending out a few invitations to people. If you haven't received one, I might just be getting around to yours. Feel free to send one in if you haven't already; I'm still checking them.

As readers and followers of this site may have noticed, new posts have been pretty slow to happen. The reason is we simply don't have enough writers with the free time to manage all of the submissions; I'm often busy, Tuxxy's expressed increasing disinterest in continuing to manage the site, and other writers have gone AWOL. To attempt to solve this, we're putting out a call for new writers to give the place some extra manpower. If you're interested in writing for what, for many, is the first stop for My Little Pony gaming and fangaming content, read below the break for more details on how to apply!

The application process is fairly simple: send an email to our submissions inbox at submit@equestriagaming.com with "Writer Application" somewhere in the subject line. The body should contain the following information:
Username:

Email address: (Use one associated with a Blogger account, or with a Google account that can easily be converted into one. This is where I'll send the invite. If omitted, I'll assume this to be the email address used to send the application.)

Skype/Steam/etc: (Some way for us to get into instant messaging contact with you. At least one of these is required.)

Focus: (Would you rather simply cover releases of games, or would you rather write reviews or some other form of content? We're looking for writers of all types. Optional.)

How much time can you devote to writing for Equestria Gaming?: (We're not asking for much - a little a week is more than enough. Vague answers are fine too, as long as there's an indication that you won't be sitting around doing nothing all the time.)

Have you written for any other blogs of this type? (Personal blogs don't count. An answer of "no" is perfectly valid; this was my first time writing for a blog too!)
In addition, please submit at least one piece of relevant writing that we can use to determine if you're qualified to write with us. Rewrite an article already posted here, review one of the games you've played, or even write about something we haven't covered yet. (Maybe it's lost in our inbox?) It doesn't even have to be related to pony gaming, although ideally it'd be something you could cut and paste into an article. There's no minimum or maximum length; just write enough to put the information out there. Either attach it to your email or just drop the contents into the body after a horizontal break or something.

Feel free to add anything to the application that you think would make a good impression on us. Formatting is flexible. Chosen applicants will be contacted through instant message for a quick screening, and then given writers' access and access to the submissions inbox.

Pen and paper RPG: MLP: Saddle Arabian Nights

$

TheTinean dropped this little oddity in our mailbox: a cross between a pen-and-paper RPG and a choose-your-own-adventure book. With character customization and the quintessential dice rollin', it's a good distraction if you're aching to play a pen-and-paper RPG but don't have the friends or GM nearby to do it.

 More details after the break.

Written by TheTinean, Saddle Arabian Nights opens with the story of a power struggle between the Saddle Arabian ponies and the natives who originally lived on the country's land. You play as a descendant of these natives, trying to overthrow the king of the country, and help the current queen, a member of this native bloodline, to raise to full power.

The game has character customization, multiple weapons, an inventory, and turn based combat like a tabletop RPG, but has a storytelling and decision structure like a choose-your-own adventure book. It's all contained with in a 6 page word document, so you can either play it at your computer or print it out and play it elsewhere. The only thing to note is that it is very easy to cheat, just like any choose your own adventure book; you are on your own word when you play, and you even control the enemy attacks. So, to get the most out of the game, you have to go hard Applejack and be honest.

Expect to die though. Everything seemed to be going my way on my first play and I still went from max health to none in one decision. It definitely takes a bit of luck, good planning, a even more luck to win. I may write a review after playing it a bit more, but my first impression is that it is very enjoyable.

And with that, hello, everyone! I'm ApocalypseUndone, one of EQG's new writers. I've been a member of the fandom since mid-season 3, and I'm excited to be working on this blog. I'm an artist, fanfic writer, and programmer. And of course, a gamer. If you wanna game with me or see where else you can find me, check me out on steam. My name there is "Call me Faceplant".

New Megamare X trailer

Megaman being one of my favorite series, I GOT HYPE from this one. Toasty Justice sent in the showcase trailer for Megamare X from EFNW 2014, and it's looking like the project is making good progress. "Now featuring Mech-suits, new enemies, intense platforming, vigorous challenges, and more to come!" he says? Well, count me in!

Get the trailer above; if you want to follow the project, you can do so on twittertumblrdeviantArt, and their website. Also, apologies to Toasty Justice for being a little slow on posting.

Update: MLP: Revenants of Chaos / Project Dash playable demo

Here we have an update on the progress of MLP: Revenants of Chaos, a promising upcoming adventure platformer clearly inspired in 16-bit era classics. In this game we take on the role of everyone's favourite technicolor flyer, Rainbow Dash, as she runs and flies around Ponyville collecting gems and fruit and avoiding dangerous oranges.

This demo features one single level, that although short shows clear effort and love by the part of the developers. The Tails-like gameplay is fluent, with nice details like slight inertia, and doesn't rush you like other examples of the genre. You can, if desired, try your best at speeding through the level, avoiding or ramming enemies, releasing them of their citric ailment; or just enjoy the scenery and carefully trot and jump around the beautiful equestrian landscape, looking for hidden paths and collectibles thrown around for 100% completion.

The game's most notable aspect is the carefully designed and well executed artistic section, with defined and well-done sprites and backgrounds. The demo shows urban, countryside and cave sections with smooth transitions between each, giving a a feeling of natural progression as the level goes by. The music manages to convey a general atmosphere of cheerful relaxation, compelling the player to spend time appreciating the Equestrian landscape, whilst not taking attention away from the action at hand.

Rainbow Dash speeding through the cave section.
The game engine handles quick movements and reactions without a delay, and manages to control large crowds of homing enemies with naturality, as well as mantain the aggresive movement of fruited birds while the released ones fly away. it isn't devoid of issues, like blue birds chasing Dash undewater, which looks kinda silly, and in my opinion the front layer of the scenario requires a smoothing/blur effect on scrolling, since otherwise the pixel-by-pixel movement puts a great strain in the eyes after playing for a while. While this wouldn't be an issue in monitors with real refreshment (people still using CRTs rejoice) on modern monitors it is quite evident.
Of course, being a demo these small issues can be overlooked without greatly affecting the experience, as we can assume they'll be fixed by the time the final release sees the light.

All in all, this game shows great promise, and will most likely become a favourite of those who enjoy fast, retro-style games.

Thanks to Redenchilada for inviting me to hop aboard this blog. I do hope this is the first of many articles to come. Signing off for the first time, Nerthos.

Review: Derpy & The Hunting of the Super Tasty Muffin (of Awesomeness)

Derpy & The Hunting of the Super Tasty Muffin (of Awesomeness)

Now if that title doesn't make you want to play this game, I don't know what will. Derpy & The Hunting of the Super Tasty Muffin (of Awesomeness) is a graphic text adventure made by PonyDreamStudios that will most likely entertain you with all its open possibilities and silly situations. The game is currently in Beta, but the main story is already completed.

The story of this game follows our main character, Derpy, as she discovers the recipe for the most delicious, most awesome muffin in existence and immediately sets off to collect the ingredients necessary to bake it, with the help of Twilight Sparkle and her friends.

The music is retro-styled and quite catchy, and the graphics are made to give you the feeling that you're playing in an old TV, which it succeeded in doing in my opinion. These settings can be turned off if you prefer, however.

The gameplay consists entirely of typing your actions, like most other games of this genre, and allows you a great deal of freedom when it comes to verbs and nouns, as well as implementing abbreviations of certain words, which is a big relief, especially when you have to write something like "Sweet Apple Acres" often (which can be replaced simply by "saa").

However, being an almost completely text-driven game, things that can normally be overlooked such as misspellings or grammar errors become a much bigger deal, and this game unfortunately had quite a few of those. You can still understand everything, but when you detect one it really takes you out of the immersion.

As for something a little more troublesome, during my playthrough of the game I encountered a bug that prevented me from advancing normally. Fortunately, the game includes cheat commands that the player can use, which allowed me to skip the one obstacle that was causing the crash without skipping more than a few lines of dialogue.

Also, if you get stuck or don't know what to do at any point in the game (which is very common in text adventure games), there is a full video walkthrough available. It only covers the main objective of the game, though. There are many easter eggs and secrets that you can find if you're creative.

Overall, the game is very entertaining and fun, although the problems mentioned before may hinder the experience slightly, but the good things far outweigh the bad.

By the way, hello everyone, I'm Strate and this was my first article on Equestria Gaming! I look forward to writing a lot more about the world of pony gaming. See you next time!

Demo: Super Pony Wars

http://project-spw.tumblr.com/

Super Pony Wars is a turn-based strategy game modeled after the Super Robot Wars (or Super Robot Taisen) games. The player moves each pony around a grid-based map and chooses from a list of attacks to defeat the enemies. You can also choose to watch the neat attack animations or skip them if you'd prefer. It's currently under development and the creator of the game is looking for anyone who would like to help in the making of it.

The story of the game will follow that of the show, starting off from Nightmare Moon's return. The creator said he is also thinking of incorporating fanfiction stories to the game, such as Fallout Equestria.

The game uses the same combat system as its originator. You can choose to use an attack either before or after moving your unit, but certain attacks can only be used before moving. Right before starting an attack, the game will show you the stats of both units that will be involved, as well as the hit percentage, which indicates how likely it is for the attack to land.

Units being attacked will have three options:
  1. Counterattack, which will allow them to use an attack of their own after the attacking unit is finished.
  2. Evade, which reduces the enemy attack's hit percentage by half.
  3. Defend, which reduces the damage taken by half.
This, along with many other attributes that are not yet implemented in this demo (such as offensive and defensive supports, as well as Spirit abilities), give the game a nice level of strategy and thought. There are many ways to approach a stage and you can find one that suits you best.

The game uses music from the Super Robot Wars games, remixed to better fit the ponies.

After every stage, you can upgrade your ponies using the money you earned by defeating enemies. Once again, the game gives you a great deal of freedom to choose how to upgrade them. You can upgrade their HP and make them extremely sturdy, upgrade their attacks and make them extremely powerful, balance everything out, or just upgrade them in the way you feel like.

Right now, the game has 2 stages available: Friendship is Magic Part 1 and 2. Go ahead and give it a try if you feel interested, and if you'd like to help in the making of the game, contact the author at his Tumblr. This game shows a lot of potential and I'll be looking forward to seeing it progress.

My Little Game Dev Pony Build-Up Event!

http://mylittlegamedev.com/2014/07/pony-build-game-dev-training-grounds/
For those of you who would like to improve your skills in the arts of game making, here is a good chance to do so. My Little Game Dev is hosting an event about creating Pony mini-games based on themes. If you want to make a game but lack the motivation or the base to do so, this is a good start. And for those who don't actually want to make games, you will still be able to play the entries, so why not take a look around?

The basic structure of the event is this: Every 4 days, at midnight GMT+8 (Philippines, Manila), the MLGD page will put up the theme for the mini-games, and those who want to take part must make a game that includes that theme. This is very flexible; you can interpret the themes however you want, and if you'd prefer, you can skip a theme and make a game with both that theme and the next one.

The game doesn't have to be complete; incomplete games are accepted too - just be sure to state if it's complete or not. The deadline for each theme is 4 days, so try to submit before the next theme starts.

The first day of the event has already started(and I blame myself for not finding this yesterday), and you can find this round's theme here: Pony Build Up Day 1!

Have fun and happy game making!

If you have some time to kill but don't have enough energy to invest into a complex game, here's a more simple option for you. Leap from pillar to pillar while avoiding the off-screen hydra and collecting gems on the way that you can use to unlock other ponies and hats(YES HATZ) in this little game that could potentially rival Flappy Bird when it comes to addictiveness. Available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and even Android!

Since it's a rather straightforward concept there's no break this time. Enjoy!

Getting to Cloudopolis
In order to get to Cloudopolis, you must travel via the airship in Cantermore!

If you're in Cantermore, travel up the cliff to the airship port and board your way onto the airship.

If you're starting in Ponydale, you must first go to the train station and travel to Cantermore, and then go to the airship port.

Getting to Cantermore
In order to get to Cantermore, you must travel via train from Ponydale or via airship from Cloudopolis!

If you're in Ponydale, you must travel via train. The train station is just past Sugarcane Corner.

If you're in Cloudopolis, go to the airport located high up and to the right of the main cloud.

Getting to Ponydale
If you'd like to visit the quaint little town of Ponydale, you must go by train from Cantermore.

Once you're in Cantermore, simply go to the train station by by Astral Charm.

Questing
Plenty of NPCs (Non-Player Characters) need help with their tasks! Some give out special prizes if you lend them a helping hoof!

Go up to any NPC, right click, and select "Talk." NPCs have a "..." over their name.

Listen to what they have to say, and be sure to follow their instructions in order to move on in the quest.

At the end, you might get a reward for your kindness!

Battling
Watch out when going to the Evershade Forest! It's home to some scary monsters!

In order to defend yourself against the creatures you'll encounter, try using your special combat abilities!

Earth Ponies have Seismic Buck and Rough Terrain, Unicorns have Rainbow Fields and Magical Arrow, and Pegasi have Dual Cyclone and Gale! All three races have Ground Pound.

When ready, select a creature, a target reticule should appear. Attack the mob by getting in their range and selecting your skill.

When the enemy's health gets to zero, they'll faint! Don't worry though, I'm sure they can just walk it off.

Parties
If you want to form a party with other players, you can right-click them and add them to your party!

Parties are useful for going out and exploring. You never know when you might run into monsters, and there is always safety in numbers!

Trading
Do you have an interesting item that you'd like to give to a friend? Well, you can trade them!

Simply right click on your friend and hit "Trade." The other pony needs to accept your trade for it to continue.

Once accepted, you'll see a screen. Left click and add the item to the trading menu.

When both players are satisfied with the trade, they both must hit "Ready." When both players hit "Ready," a "Done" button will appear. Once both players hit the "Done" button, the trade will be completed.

Stuck Somewhere?
Have no fear! No need to call the moderators! Simply type /stuck or unstuck me and you will be moved to the starting point of the map. (This will not work if you are in combat.)
I may or may not be around the servers during the weekend. If I am, I'll be romping around as Jalapeño Billy if anyone's interested in stalking me or goofing off. See you guys there, maybe!

MoonLight game looking for team members

That video thumbnail may be confusing, but rest assured the topic of the video is indeed ponies. The team working on a game called MoonLight are looking for new members to help in the making of the game. Below the break I will put the details as to what they're looking for right now.

First of all, what kind of video game is this? Well, the director of the game has defined it as 2.5D action-adventure platformer that will focus on exploration, reflexes and player intelligence. It is being made in the Unity 3D engine.

Now, since the list of things they're looking for is quite large, I'm only going to mention some of them, but you can find the whole list as well as a lot more information about the game Right Here.

The main things they are searching for right now are concept artists and sprite animators.

The team is looking for one or two more writers. They want the story to be engaging to the player, a funny and endearing tale for them to explore.

They're looking for programmers that are efficient and fluent in Unity 3D's various languages, especially those with knowledge of 2.5D platforming and related subjects.

And they're also looking for 3D modelers fluent in designing environments, and some specific creatures.

These are only a few of the things they're looking for. They're also looking for musicians and sound effect creators, as well as even playtesters, so if you think there's something you can contribute to the game and you want to be a part of it, go ahead and contact the creator at moonswirly@gmail.com.

Review: War of Harmony IV

$

War of Harmony IV is an RPG created by Marshal Ruffy which has been under development for quite some time now. You may remember Tuxxy reviewing an earlier build of the game, so I'd like to begin by saying I will NOT take into account that review. I will be reviewing this as if it were an entirely new game. As always, check below the break for the review.

Okay, first of all, I'd like to start off with a pretty clear warning:

THIS GAME HAS SOME PRETTY DARK AND MORBID THEMES. IT ALSO CONTAINS BLOOD.

With that out of the way, let's start with the review. I have a lot of stuff to cover so sit down and get comfy.

Now, about the game's mechanics, it has the standard aspects of an RPG such as Final Fantasy. Outside of battle you move along the map with your first party member, followed by the rest. If you touch an enemy, it starts a battle. Nothing too out of the ordinary. It has a standard equip system, in which you can equip an offense item, a defense item, a magic offense item, a magic defense item, and an accessory(although I did not find any during my playthrough, but I might have missed them).

The battle style is also fairly standard, having your normal attack, Magic abilities, a Guard command which heavily reduces damage taken and the ability to use Items.

Your main character is Rarity, and you are accompanied through most of the game by Pinkie Pie. Trixie is an optional character, and deciding to take her with you or not influences the way the story plays out, as well as activating "Hard Mode" if you decide to add her to your party.

Graphics wise, the game has some strong points and weak points. The backgrounds and general scenario presented look pretty good, the sprites and animations of the ponies are nice as well, but they are quite lacking in amount of animations and the characters and the background don't mix very well together.

Music wise, I liked most of the music presented in the game. It was pretty catchy and pleasant to listen to. Most of the themes in the game have a piano and strings as the main instrument. (Please don't kill me if I said something wrong, I'm not an expert on music.)

But now we get to the main focus of this game...the story. Oh man, this one is long.

The story is very difficult to actually describe, so I will not be explaining it directly, since it is better that you experience it for yourself, and also because, as I mentioned before, it contains some morbid stuff, but I will try to list the good and the bad things I saw in it. First of all, the game is presented in a scenario that, while it's not so common, has been done before in some stories, which is that it starts you off already in the middle of a story. That means two important things: Something already happened, and the characters already know that something happened.

However, here is where I saw the first problem with the story. Most stories that present this scenario usually have the characters themselves do the explaining through either reminiscing or by recounting the events to a character that does not know them. The game did this to an extent, but left too many holes, which makes it hard for the player to be able to properly string together the information they have. As far as I know, this game is the first one of a series of four, which means it should at least give the player something to properly understand instead of scattered bits of information that cannot be connected with each other. It doesn't have to tell the whole story, but at least an understandable part of it that gives the player a clue as to why they are doing what they are doing.

For a good point, those bits of information you gather through the story are quite interesting by themselves, and they have quite a bit of substance each.

As for the pacing of the storytelling...it's not very good. It's quite erratic and tends to break the immersion one can have. Sometimes it jumps too quickly from plot point A to plot point B and doesn't make a smooth transition, and sometimes it takes too much time to close an important point of the story, making it feel too drawn out.

Pinkie Pie, and to a lesser extent Trixie, tend to break the fourth wall regularly.

Now, an interesting thing this game has, is that it gives you "Reputation", which is a value that determines how you(Rarity) stand in the eyes of Pinkie and Trixie(If you chose to take her with you). Of course, as one may expect, this reputation meter is based on the choices you make during conversations and special events within the game, and it determines how certain parts of the story will happen. The bad thing about this, at least for me, is that the game tells you exactly what influence your choice will have on your reputation, removing the possibility of the player having to think a choice carefully due to not wanting to lose(or gain) reputation.

In the end, all the branching paths the story can take give some replay value to the game.

The story itself, as I said, left me with quite a few more questions than I would have liked, and which I know probably won't be answered within the next games in this series. However! At the same time, the parts of the story the game gave me were enough to keep me interested and wanting to seek more information, so in the end, it fulfilled part of its purpose, which is to keep the player interested. Now it's just a matter of seeing if it can fulfill the other part, which is to give satisfaction and closure to the player when the series finally ends.

So, after all this gibberish I've been spouting, I think it's time for the score, don't you think?

I give War of Harmony IV a 6/10.
6/10
It had its flaws, I will not lie about that. However, it did manage to capture my attention and hold it, and the gameplay, while not the best, was acceptable.

Side note: I'm sorry if this review seems of lower quality than my previous ones, it was quite difficult for me to review this game, since I am not very good at reviewing storytelling, which was what I had to focus on the most.

Silent Ponyville: Echoed Sorrows is hiring

$

Silent Ponyville: Echoed Sorrows is a game where you dive into Pinkie's mind to uncover the cause of her constant nightmares. (Or something like that. There isn't much to go off of from their site.) The team behind the game is currently looking for a few extra hands to assist with development. Though there isn't much information about the project at the present time, they already have a trailer up, and  a GitHub repository of unfinished code is available on one of the developers' profile for curious eyes to look over.

More information, including how to contact the team, is available either on their site or copy-pasted below the break.

We need help!
In order to minimize time wasted on mostly useless paragraphs (like this one), we'll cut straight to the chase.

We need:

Background artists
In order to make this game shine, we have to have slightly more than a black background (and no, green will not do the trick here either :P).

    Qualifications needed:

Ability to create a background from scratch (by scratch, we mean, not a modification of another background)
Ability to do a pixel art style (not absolutely needed, but it would be great if you could)

Cutscene artists and/or animators
    Qualifications needed:

Ability to create a cutscene depicting a story, either from an amount of static images, or from an animation

Writers
While the original "Silent Ponyville" fan fiction was amazing, it is not fit for a video game.

    Qualifications needed:

        Experience with writing
Ability to improvise based off of pre-existing material

Voice actors
At the moment, we are only interested in monster sounds (e.g. groans, wails, screams, etc...), and a few lines from pinkie pie.

Once we have the story finished, we will revisit this.

Send your applications to: ule1452 (at) gmail (dot) com

Remember to include your skype username, and some examples of work you have done in the area you're applying for (if you don't have previous experience, show us that you can work in that area)

In other news, I'm going to attempt to keep team member requests such as this one listed in the Events section on the site's sidebar as long as they stay active, since that section gets fairly little love as it is. Announcements will still get their own posts, of course; this will simply be a way to keep an easy index to find open positions on projects, for those interested in contributing to something.

Poképon early alpha release

This one's been sitting in the inbox for a little bit while some preparations were made for the post. Poképon, made by Silverweed91, is a Pokémon-styled battle simulator featuring various ponies and other characters from the FiM universe. The current early release is a little barebones and unstable, but battling and teambuilding over the internet are fully supported. The game takes inspiration from Pokémon Showdown in its presentation and layout, for an easy transition for anyone used to that interface.

A download link, as well as instructions for running the game, are available at the game's GitHub repository. Since there's no official game server running, I've set one up on my VPS; to connect, set the IP to lyrawearspants.com and the port to its default. There may not be anyone ready to battle when you connect; in that case, simply wait around for someone to show up.

 MoonLight Tumblr

If you remember the game MoonLight from a few posts back, it now has its own Tumblr in case you want to follow its progress. Along with that, the creator has added a "demo" of the engine being tried out and a sample of the music that has been made so far. The engine is still in an extremely early state, but I think it gives a good feel of what the game is aiming for.

Demo: The Underworld's Cello 2.0

Note: This game contains a few mature themes, as well as some crude gore.

Are you enjoying Halloween so far? No? Let's do something about that. Octavia in The Underworld's Cello is a point-and-click adventure game made by Herooftime1000 wherein two ponies get lost in an old mansion. Within, you'll find puzzles, alchemy, and even a few card games. The content present is a lot of fun, and the game seems to take inspiration from old LucasArts point-and-clicks in every aspect of presentation.

Though the game is unfinished, the current content is more than enough for a good evening of fun and jump scares, as long as you make sure to save often. The puzzles present are great fun, and the mechanics help to add a lot of depth to the gameplay, though occasionally an item seemed to vanish upon pickup with a full inventory.

Game: Unicorn Training

Adventures in Equica: Unicorn Training is a top-down shooter/RPG hybrid game developed by Yotes Games for mobile phones and tablets, which takes inspiration from the FiM universe but apparently manages to be distinct enough to get away with being a paid game. The game centers around a young unicorn named Clover, apprentice to Totally Not Starswirl the Bearded, as she trains in the ways of magical combat. While we posted about the project in its earlier days, when it was known as Unicorn Quest, the game finally released over the weekend for Android devices. The full version, which costs 99 cents, contains nine dungeons to explore, though only the first is available in the demo.

While the game shows promise, my play session with the demo was disappointing; poor touch screen controls combined with tedious, monotonous fights and a dungeon that went on for too long to create an unsatisfying experience. Various bugs in movement and the interface served only to further dampen the fun. In addition, the boss at the end of the demo's dungeon simply vanished when I attempted to reload a save file, leaving me no other option but to exit without seeing whatever proper ending may have been there. An extra coat of polish and some more effort on dungeon design would greatly benefit this game; right now, I can't recommend much more than trying the demo out for a play session or two.

Shattered Kingdom

There are a lot of story-based games circling around the pony fandom, but not many have the strong player-influenced dynamic that Shattered Kingdom aims to provide. The project, being developed by a group known as Alicorn Games, is a turn-based strategy RPG centered around an Equestrian civil war between the Celestial Empire and the New Lunar Republic. The game will be heavily story-oriented and non-linear, with the player's actions influencing various story elements throughout the course of the game.

The game is still early in development, and no public demo exists (at least that I can find), but a recent video of their panel at Bronycon 2014 showcases some of the team's current progress. More information can be found on the team's official blog.
