It's Always Sunny in Dark Skyes

In case you read the comments of our last post, you'd have heard that Dark Skyes' artist Pukey Pony got together with several folks and began work on an actual visual novel based off of the ill-fated trolling attempt (albeit without the supposed "deep RPG elements" and "100+ hours of gameplay"). As of now they're using placeholder music and backgrounds until more progress is made on the writing and character artwork, but I guess that isn't a really big deal since the fandom does have an overall lack of complete dating sims and it'd be nice to have that particular genre covered.

There was a video update before this one, but Sam Hyde had it taken down from YouTube over "copyright violations" or some crap like that.

Meanwhile, Windmistress is still probably one of the most unintentionally hilarious OCs I've ever seen in a pony fangame (especially with that cringeworthy dialogue in the original Dark Skyes trailer).

My Little Investigations Case 1 Released

That's right. After almost three years in development, My Little Investigations - the fandom's premier Phoenix Wright-inspired adventure game, from Equestrian Dreamers - has finally released its first case, True Blue Scootaloo. They also have the soundtrack, as well as the source code for both the current version and the previous Java-based version, available for download.

This case has been a long time coming, and I could go on about how excited I've been, but I think I'll save that for a review. For now, I'm just going to point you guys over to their Downloads page to get it for yourself. See their announcement below the break. (Or just read it on their site...)

That’s right! After almost three years in development, the first case in My Little Investigations is finally ready to be released to the public!
I’m sure the first thing that you’re looking for is a download link, so you can find that here:
http://www.equestriandreamers.com/downloads/
At that link, you can find four things:
  1. The game executable itself plus case 1
  2. The soundtrack to case 1, composed by Trot Pilgrim
  3. Source code for the game executable
  4. Source code for the (now-defunct) Java case compiler (+ game implementation)
If you just want to play the game, the first item is what you want. Highly recommended is the second option, as Trot Pilgrim did an awfully fine job scoring the game. If you’re interested in exactly how the game works or are interested in any specific functionality therein, the third option will give you that. And if you’re academically curious, the fourth option contains the source code both for the initial Java demo of the game, and of the case compiler in Java that I’ve been using to compile the first case. It’s very bare-bones and is really not very good, and is entirely unsupported – now that case 1 is released, work on a proper case creator is underway in earnest – so only the most curious and adventurous will find anything there. Still, we included it for the sake of completeness.
If you’d like to discuss the game, don’t forget to check out our forum! Talk about MLI, about MLP:FiM in general, or about general things with other fans is all welcome!
Finally, I’d like to mention that we also now have a Twitter account, @EqDreamers! We’ll be using that account both to alert fans to new posts here, news about MLI, or just general communication with others. So, following us is definitely encouraged. :)

We’ll have more to post about in the coming days, but that’s probably more than enough for right now. Enjoy!
Stay tuned for our review in the coming days. I'm off to give the game a spin!

Review: My Little Investigations - True Blue Scootaloo

True Blue Scootaloo screenshot

After a long time in development, with almost no word on progress from the team until recently, Equestrian Dreamers finally released the first case in their point-and-click adventure game, My Little Investigations, titled True Blue Scootaloo. While the game has received its fair share of attention and hype, does the first substantial fruit of the team's labor live up to expectations? Well, that's what this post is for. Check out some rambling opinions on the game across the break.

Note: This review contains spoilers for the case. Read on with caution if you want to experience the game blind.

The game opens up on a simple premise; Rarity's cat and prized jewel have gone missing, and it's up to Twilight Sparkle to find who's responsible before the unnamed bumbling investigation team from Canterlot arrives to take over the case. The first issue the game falls into is the classic whodunnit trap of giving away the culprit to players in the very intro; this takes away much of the entertainment value of finding out who did it, and turns the game into a simple matter of finding out what the player already knows. While it doesn't ruin the overall story, it does blow the opportunity for a wonderful plot twist that would have added so much more to the case.

True Blue Scootaloo screenshot
I feel ya, Twilight.

In terms of character writing, the game does well; nobody acts particularly out-of-character, or does anything that wouldn't be expected out of them in a canon universe. Dynamics between characters are also well-explored, with characters reacting off of each other in ways that feel remarkably similar to an episode of the show. However, Pinkie Pie's integration as an obnoxious, fourth-wall-breaking tutorial does little except to annoy the player, and in my playthrough was quickly disabled after the first few appearances. The only OCs present also served absolutely no function except as some half-hearted attempt at world-building, and are safely ignored within the game. I appreciate making any interactions with them unnecessary, but it leads to them serving only as dead space to please a few contest winners.

The game has a few issues with ambiguous evidence leading to player confusion. One example was during Scootaloo's confrontation; when the player is expected to give a reason for her to crash through Rarity's window as she rides her scooter around it, my first inclination was to present the hair, which was clearly marked as "probably the cause of the rider's swerve". Instead, the solution was to parrot back the fact that she was practicing a trick, and let Twilight automatically connect the hair to the conversation. Giving the player evidence which has the sole purpose of being immediately thrown back into the conversation feels obtuse and arbitrary in a game that's supposed to be about the player putting the pieces together.

In other situations, the game has a bit of a hand holding problem. While some of that is to be expected in a first case, the game goes rather overboard with it; even after I disabled the tutorials (which seemed to go overboard in explaining things that really didn't need explanations), the writing has a bad habit of making the next step incredibly obvious. This becomes especially apparent once Rarity starts tagging along; the player is consistently directed to their next move from then until acquiring the search warrant.

True Blue Scootaloo screenshot

When the game isn't suffering from those issues, though, the writing is superb. The whole Diamond Dog search scene through the end of the case stands out in particular as a fantastically put-together bit of gameplay, giving the player just enough guidance to keep them from being hopelessly lost without giving away the answer, having logical connections just ingenious enough to make the player feel clever for discovering them, and serving as a wonderful sendoff for the case. The game's story is well-executed overall; the few flaws present, however, hold it back from greatness.

As for the vehicle that drives the story - the gameplay - there are a few interface issues that detract from the experience. The lack of ability to skip through text the first time you see it, in particular, is an inconvenience for quick readers who don't want to sit through a slowly-ticking text box before continuing; I often found myself multitasking with other things while listening to a conversation, since the game was having trouble holding my interest at those times.Edit: The developers have added this functionality into the game through the 1.0.1 update. The lack of any method of keyboard control is also inconvenient; while the game was obviously designed for a mouse, and benefits from it, having an option for keyboard control would be very handy for those who prefer such a setup. At the very least, having keyboard shortcuts for the evidence screen and active partner abilities would be a huge convenience.

The game also seemed to have performance issues on my laptop. Even with the pre-loading present (which brings the game's RAM usage up to astronomical levels for a game of this complexity), the game would often stutter for a few seconds at a time loading a particular voice clip. There was also the occasional issue of the background for an area simply not loading, which happened to me once or twice during my playthrough, and some people I know have reported softlocks, though I never encountered any myself. These issues are fairly minor, and certainly don't detract from my overall enjoyment of the game, but they are issues that need to be fixed.

Purgatory screenshot
Whoops.

Graphically, the game is very inconsistent; show-modeled overworld and conversation sprites (that sometimes have a habit of going off-model) mix with cutscene graphics that have a rather unappealing style, at least to me. Overworld graphics are very well-animated, while the single animated pose present in conversations (Twilight's accusatory point) feels very stiff and unprofessional. The interface is also rather plain, with nothing to give it character aside from... black boxes. The graphics certainly do their job adequately, and they don't look bad by any means (the opening and title screen in particular have a very professional quality to them), but they could be so much better.

The audio is a mixed bag. The voices are generally okay impressions, but they vary in microphone quality a lot, even through the same character, and they start to grate after a while. Turning off voices does little to help, as the chirping noise that replaces them is rather grating after a short time. However, the music production is superb, with a number of wonderful tracks that do a great job of setting a mood and sounding pleasing to the ears overall. The music that goes with Rainbow Dash explaining how she gave Scootaloo her ribbon stood out to me as a particular highlight. (That might just be my affinity for the CMC theme from the show, though.)

Overall, the game will be highly entertaining to those who enjoy the type of gameplay it offers, and an interesting curiosity at the least to anyone else. Production values are shaky at times, and it's not a very long game, seeing as it's only a single case, but it uses the time well to create a fun experience.

8/10

The MLI engine has certainly shown a lot of potential with this game; it'll be interesting to see what happens if and when a case designer is released into the wild for others to make their own custom cases with.

Nightfall Beta Five

Nightfall's title screen.

Today marks the release of Nightfall's fifth beta, along with all the new features and balance adjustments that such an update usually entails. So if you've already finished My Little Investigations (or haven't gotten around to playing it, like yours truly) and have some spare time, you might as well give this a spin and see if the changes are for the better or not, since apparently the game is getting fairly close to leaving beta and will be considered stable once it does so.

Changelog below the break.

  • Added Ghost Structures system. This little feature may change the whole way the game is played! Pressing [Shift]+[S] over a structure turns it into a 'Ghost Structure', which allows you to shoot through them. In return, they receive 25% more damage from enemies.
  • Added Trance system. You now have a little 'Trance' bar, which is filled by killing enemies or getting hit. In short, the more Trance you have, the more damage you make! A full Trance bar means x3 damage!
  • Added autosave and quicksave (F5-F8). The game gets autosaved after each night, which you can load in case you get a Game Over. You can also quicksave (F5) and quickload (F8) your game at any time! (even at the main menu).
  • Added new items and achievements. Trance and Invincibility potions!
  • Improved enemies' behavior.
  • Killing enemies now also restores spirit. You have to kill them yourself, though! Not your towers.
  • Trees now constantly regenerate HP. You couldn't heal 'em, but they can heal themselves now! No more worries.
  • Structures can't get completely destroyed anymore upon falling/dying. Another big change here. Nothing was as frustrating as falling off the map (or getting killed) and walking back to your Base, only to find there was nothing left. This doesn't happen anymore! Structures still get damage upon falling/dying, but they can only be destroyed by enemies.
  • Leveling up mercenaries costs less money. Half the price for all ponies!
  • Mercenaries don't obstruct your building box anymore. Mercenaries were really annoying because of this. Luckily, you can build over them now, so don't worry!
  • Added 5 more nights (new enemies, boss, etc.): up to night 35.
  • Last implemented night now loops (endless runs). You don't get 'enemy-less nights' anymore! Night 35 loops (without the boss) so you can keep playing if you want.
  • 'Destiny Shift' costs much less spirit. NOW it's useful.
  • Invincibility now lasts 10 seconds.
  • Changed 'Game speed' key to F2.
  • Other minor changes and bug fixes. There was this huge bug regarding night 25's boss which would prevent the game from re-generating the world. There are also more changes and bug fixes regarding enemy spawn rate, skills, achievements, mercenaries, store upgrades, graphics, and the like.

Horse Game Update 3

Apparently punting small animals off into the distance is all the rage these days, as the newest Horse Game video seems to focus almost exclusively on this cruel (yet totally hilarious) activity. There's also a rather nice sword and a WIP map which will probably look much more impressive in the near future once some more work has been done on it, although that's probably not their main priority right now.

Oh yeah, and the team's lead developer occasionally posts small updates on his Twitter account, which you can follow @SprakleDev.

Today: the Beginning of Yet Another LoE Server Weekend Thing

Back in March we posted about an upcoming Legends of Equestria open server weekend from April 18 to 20, and now that the 18th has finally been reached we are pleased to announce that the event has begun on time. You can download a copy of the game here, and don't worry about login issues; apparently the team has resolved those so we probably won't have more horror stories of people literally waiting for several hours to get in.

If you aren't able to play this weekend for whatever reason, I'd suggest downloading the client anyways since Tux3 will probably release another private server for it after the event is done. We've also copypasted a guide to the game below, which you can also find at http://forum.legendsofequestria.com/index.php?topic=10677.

Forum Account
If you haven't already got one, you can make a forum account at http://forum.legendsofequestria.com/index.php?action=register

System Requirements
To run our game, you'll need to make sure you have the following:
  • 2 GB ram Dual core processor, somewhere near 2 GHz.
  • A single core processor works, but is not recommended
  • An okay graphics card. If the computer is made after 2007, you'll be fine. The bare minimum would probably be 128 MB vram, DirectX9.0c/OpenGL2.0
  • 1.5 gigabytes of hard drive space
  • OS: Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux

Getting to Cloudopolis

In order to get to Cloudopolis, you must travel via the airship in Cantermore!

If you're in Cantermore, travel up the cliff to the airship port and board your way onto the airship.

If you're starting in Ponydale, you must first go to the train station and travel to Cantermore, and then go to the airship port.

Getting to Cantermore

In order to get to Cantermore, you must travel via train from Ponydale or via airship from Cloudopolis!

If you're in Ponydale, you must travel via train. The train station is just past Sugarcane Corner.

If you're in Cloudopolis, go to the airport located high up and to the right of the main cloud.

Getting to Ponydale

If you'd like to visit the quaint little town of Ponydale, you must go by train from Cantermore.

If you're in Cloudopolis, go to the airport and get to Cantermore.

Once you're in Cantermore, simply go to the train station by by Astral Charm.

Battling

Watch out when going to the Evershade Forest! It's home to some scary monsters!

In order to defend yourself against the creatures you'll encounter, try using your special combat abilities!

Earth Ponies have Seismic Buck and Rough Terrain, Unicorns have Rainbow Fields and Magical Arrow, and Pegasi have Dual Cyclone and Gale! All three races have Ground Pound.

When ready, select a creature, a target reticule should appear. Attack the mob by getting in their range and selecting your skill.

When the enemy's health gets to zero, they'll faint! Don't worry though, I'm sure they can just walk it off.

Parties

If you want to form a party with other players, you can right-click them and add them to your party!

Parties are useful for going out and exploring. You never know when you might run into monsters, and there is always safety in numbers!

Trading

Do you have an interesting item that you'd like to give to a friend? Well, you can trade them!

Simply right click on your friend and hit "Trade." The other pony needs to accept your trade for it to continue.

Once accepted, you'll see a screen. Left click and add the item to the trading menu.

When both players are satisfied with the trade, they both must hit "Ready." When both players hit "Ready," a "Done" button will appear. Once both players hit the "Done" button, the trade will be completed.

Stuck Somewhere?

Have no fear! No need to call the moderators! Simply type /stuck or unstuck me and you will be moved to the starting point of the map. (This will not work if you are in combat.)

Not long left, everyone!

Review: Pony Platforming Project 3 1/2

The title screen for MFA 1 1/2
Pony Platforming Project 3 1/2

If you remember when Minty Fresh Adventure was released back in April over two years ago (has it really been that long?), Mark Sprague mentioned that he was planning on releasing an expansion of sorts to the game, but it kind of got pushed out of the way in order to focus on finishing the much more ambitious Minty Fresh Adventure II by the end of the year. Of course, we all know how that went, and in order to keep us distracted from asking where his game went Mark has gone and finally tossed PPP 3 1/2 to the masses...two years late.

Ah well, at least it's something. In case you're wondering how the expansion turned out, I've written a review of sorts below the break.

In the original Minty Fresh Adventure, it was possible for Colgate to stumble across a sock lying on the ground in the Cave of Wisdom and drop down a pit for a miniboss encounter, after which she would rescue a sock-obsessed pony named Minty. This expansion reveals that she was apparently trapped in said cave for several years while searching for missing socks, and after all that she's apparently still foolhardy enough to go back in there to see if she can find the rest of them. One wonders why she doesn't just go buy some more, but that would make for a completely different kind of game that may or may not be appropriate to post here.

Since this is basically a standalone expansion pack, it's pretty much a given that the gameplay will be very similar to that of Minty Fresh Adventure's, and it's pretty much just that without the time-stopping mechanics and the giant weaponized toothbrush. In its place Minty has the ability to...throw candy at things. It doesn't sound like much, but she can use to heal herself if thrown straight upwards and tame various creatures à la Little Nemo: The Dream Master (with the exception of skeletons and spiders, who are damaged by them as if they were normal projectiles, and the unmountable bugbears). Mounting them can provide Minty with several advantages such as faster movement speed, double-jumping and better damage absorption. While not strictly necessary for a simple run of the game, they are incredibly useful for the most part and are vital for completing certain sidequests.

Not quite as hilariously awesome as beating the game as a toothpaste tube, but still pretty neat.
Those who expected something completely different will be somewhat disappointed, however. It's pretty much MFA with some different gameplay elements, a completely re-arranged Cave of Wisdom and some fairly decent bossfights. The expansion is fairly short as well if one just attempts to head straight to the end without interacting with any of the other characters or bothering to pick up any of Minty's socks, but then one would be missing out on the humourous dialogue and the possibility of earning a better ending. At least the replay value is fairly high for a game of this length, thanks to the aforementioned sidequests and multiple endings. The cutie mark achievement system also makes a return from some of the previous games, thankfully enough, and I hear there's actually a reward for getting them all...

I'd put a rating on this along with some more in-depth criticism if I had the time and this were a full game, so I guess this will have to do for now. Perhaps I'll expand upon this once I've returned, but in the meantime enjoy the game/expansion thingy!

Ponykart Looking for 3D Modelers

Rainbow Dash's kart design.
Ponykart

Work on the Ponykart C++ port seems to be progressing smoothly, if at a rather slow pace, but it seems that they still have a shortage of 3D modelers (a problem seemingly shared by many FOSS games). The fandom does seem to have a distinct lack of those as well, sadly, but if you happen to have some experience with 3DS Max and/or Blender and would like to contribute to the community in some way or another, this is probably an almost perfect opportunity for you to get some practice and should look pretty good on your résumé.

I wasn't told exactly where interested applicants were supposed to apply for the position, so you might as well just do so at the recruitment thread if you feel like it, which can be found at http://ponykart.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=dqbg1ss4oeajnblv8k3b5g44f0&topic=52.

Legends of Equestria Releases Post-Babscon Trailer

$

For various reasons, the Legends of Equestria development team decided to release a Babscon trailer showcasing the game minus the apparently quite awesome dragon invasion they held near the open server weekend's end, which I find somewhat disappointing. Ah well, at least it's a nice preview for those of you who want a sample of the LoE experience without waiting for another open server weekend or the lines of people sitting on that one rooftop and general goofiness typically found in private servers, the latter of which I wouldn't consider a downside to visiting a private server at all.

And on another note, tux3 released his LoE private server build on GitHub a couple days ago, which you can grab at https://github.com/tux3/LoE-PrivateServer/releases for whenever those go live.

This is where the screencaps of the dragon invasion would be if I still remembered where they were.

Equestria Racing

Here we have Equestria Racing, which appears to be some sort of ponified Superman 64 clone minus the beat 'em up sections and kryptonite fog. I do have some rather mixed-feelings about it so far, but hopefully the final product will manage to make for it by throwing in some interesting locations to fly around in and whatnot.

I've embedded some of the previous development updates below the break as well, in case you're interested in seeing those.

Fallout Equestria: the Unblinking

$

Now that The Overmare Studios has released this new Fallout: Equestria preview, I can kind of understand why their previous videos used a first-person perspective: their current pony model looks surprisingly creepy when animated, especially with those large, unblinking eyes. Come to think of it, it feels like there's something a bit off with almost all of the animations, although I can't quite lay my finger on it. Perhaps it's just because the animations are incomplete, or maybe this is actually a surreal horror game and Littlepip is an android who happens to fall into the uncanny valley. It's already scarier than Dead Space, so why stop there when you can go all the way down?

They're also recruiting, and since I don't feel like pasting their ad below the break this time you can read about their requirements at http://theovermare.com/blog/2014/04/flow-of-animations.

I really need to install a feed reader on Windows so I don't fall behind when it comes to picking up news.

This has been sitting in our inbox for a few days undetected, but someone by the name of inderpxar(?) modded VVVVVV to replace all of the characters with ponies. There are also a few dialog changes. There's not really much to say about a simple graphics mod, but it's an excuse to play through the game again, so I suppose it must be worth something. More information, and a download link with instructions for applying the mod, can be found in the Tumblr post.

Story of the Blanks HD Update

$

0

After over a year of almost absolute silence from the developers of the Story of the Blanks HD remake, aside from the rare animation preview and occasional snippets of the soundtrack by Kyoga, their head has come forth and confessed that she's essentially paranoid about the possibility of a C&D (nevermind that the vast majority of fangames have never received one, contrary to what your average EqD commenter might tell you) and is really wanting to move to an entirely original style with renamed characters and...ugh. It's almost as if she's forgotten that this is supposed to be a fangame, let alone a remake of a fairly well-known creepypasta, and such a project should be more a labor of love rather than merely an opportunity to make money. Heck, the reason why people were attracted to this project in the first place was because it purported to be an expanded re-imagining of the original game in the same spirit, not some cutesy Power Puff Girls-style romp that just happened to share its title with Story of the Blanks.

Look, I'm sorry if this comes across as rude or anything like that, but this was honestly the one ambitious fangame I was really, really excited to play someday (aside from some quirky projects like Raycord Legends and Curse of the Lost Kingdom), and now it almost looks as if it's all going to go down the drain just because the creator is afraid to accept the necessary chance of a C&D. If you're going to enter the fangame development scene at all you have to take some risks; trying to skirt around the issue by changing names/character designs will only result in people getting upset and a smaller overall playerbase.

If you're reading this, Zulema, I'm practically begging you to reversing your decision to make such drastic changes to this project. You yourself said that a large portion of the pre-existing pony animations were already complete, so changing the art style at this stage in development would result in even more work for your team and even greater stress for everyone involved, not to mention the fact that people are going to complain about this very loudly. And if you're short on animators or programmers, then I do know that quite a few people would absolutely love to work on this kind of project and finding those people should be fairly easy with the help of some pony news sites (Equestria Daily, Horse News, etc).

And if you do end up deciding to go ahead with the alternate art style, I wish you the best of luck. Chances are, you'd need it.

Demo Footage of Story of the Blanks HD

Only a couple days after the previous Story of the Blanks HD update comes this new video, featuring two very similar concepts for the game's visual style: the former being more zoomed-in while the latter taking a more effects-heavy approach with a more distant camera and the background being blurred out quite a bit more. I lean more towards the latter myself, although I get the impression that using varying camera distances for different scenes would actually be rather useful for story and atmosphere-related purposes, but if you want to give your own feedback then feel free to comment on their YouTube video and speak your heart out.

Also, you'll be pleased to hear that the team are apparently going to continuing the original, more show-accurate style unless they happen to receive a C&D, a decision which I fullheartedly support.

My younger self would probably insert some remark about parallax scrolling here.

Well what do you know, Special Somepony (also known as Cloudsdale's infamous SSP, who has simultaneously been the most popular and infuriatingly annoying person on Romance) has recently announced that he/she is providing updates about their status for whatever reason. Not that you'd want to follow the premature dating misadventures of several twelve year old children on an internet chatsite anyhow, but apparently this is pony related so I guess you can...try to enjoy this?

Maybe something like this would be better suited to Horse News.

My Little Karaoke: Additional Content Disc #2

$

Last week, the crew behind My Little Karaoke - a song pack and modification for UltraStar for singing along with various pony songs - released a new content disc. The expansion provides a total of over 90 new songs according to the developers, including foreign language versions of a few official songs for you to improvise nonsensical lyrics over, as well as a bunch of brony music of... varying quality. (I liked a couple of them, anyway.) The update also comes with a new visual identity for the project.

You can find the download here, although the individual ZIP downloads of songs are no longer available, leaving the only option to download the entire 2GB ISO (which they seem insistent on using, as opposed to other, more sane archive formats for digital downloads like this) and extract the songs you want. The prior downloads have to be installed for an automatic installation to work, although nothing's stopping you from pulling the songs themselves into a custom UltraStar installation.

Read past the break for the list of new songs in this release.

Card Game: Twilight Sparkle's Secret Shipfic Folder

This fandom has a lot of shipping. A ludicrous amount, actually. There are some problems with the shipping, however: it's not interactive, and has a tendency to take itself way too seriously. Fortunately, the shipping present here suffers neither of those problems. Instead, players are treated to a humorous card game with a surprisingly deep level of strategy
.

Developed by Horrible People Productions, Twilight Sparkle's Secret Shipfic Folder is a tongue-in-cheek card game about creating ludicrous pairings between different ponies, with options such as "Apocalyptic Future Spike x R63 Prince Blueblood" and "Anime Magical Girl Derpy x Literally Every Wonderbolt Except They're Unicorns Now" to satisfy your every fantasy. It's not all fun and games, though; Twilight has goals in mind, and the aim of the game is to fulfill as many of these as possible to earn points and reach the target score first. Effects such as changing races of characters in play and swapping ponies around the shipping grid add to the strategy. By the end of the game, the playing field is often a convoluted mess of ponies being shipped with ponies, and connecting the dots to figure out what would encourage these pairings to get to know one another is half the fun.

The 1.0 release of the core card set was recently released on the game's Tumblr page as a free-to-download PDF, and the team also has an Indiegogo fundraiser going to help finance trips to various conventions. They've already met their base goal, but the fundraiser has enough incentives (including the possibility for your very own custom expansion, as well as professionaly-printed decks) to make donating worthwhile anyway. And for those of you who don't have the resources to print your own deck (or the meatspace friends to play it with), there's a Vassal module available for playing the game online.

I haven't had the opportunity to play more than a couple games over the internet yet, but I definitely feel that the game will be a big hit at the local meetups. It's definitely a good way to pass the time with friends, and the time commitment for a game is short enough for players to jump in and out at any time. The various fandom references contained within the cards also make for a good laugh between players.

Play Legends of Equestria in August

Since I'm guessing that most of you people have already participated in one of Legends of Equestria's many open server weekends and pretty much know what to expect, there's not much for me to say aside from that it'll begin at 20:01 AM EST on August 8th and end at 11:59 PM on the 10th, and that you will need an account on their forums in order to participate in the usual mixture of general chat, roleplay, and enterprising young chaps finding increasingly convoluted ways to leave the confines of the map. Not the sort of thing that I usually enjoy, but it's not like I really have much for friends to play LoE with, so I usually just run around as a lowly mudpony and quit shortly after reaching that one really high spot just outside the lawyer-friendly city of Cantermore.

In case you wish to read the original announcement for whatever reason, you may do so at http://forum.legendsofequestria.com/index.php?topic=11989.0

And now for something completely different

Robin Steele the Waifu Thief

Created in 48 hours for the Crystal Games Challenge (which either nobody told us about or we lost in our email inbox somewhere), Robin Steele the Waifu Thief is a small game by Pix3M about a villainous Original Character Donut Steel™ barging into Canterlot Castle and claiming Twilight Sparkle as his waifu, whoever he has to take down to get there. Naturally, you play as the villain. Randomly generated floors and a massive difficulty help to somewhat increase the playability of this rather short game, and it's definitely worth a couple plays for the beautiful sprite work, but once you've experienced the ending, there isn't much to come back to.
