Early screenshot of the new Horse Game level

For a while now Horse Game's developer has been working on a brand new level, but as you can imagine it's made for quite the workload and he could really use some help getting his project off the ground. If it turns out fairly well he plans on turning this into a fully-fledged game, and that hopefully includes the possibility of online multiplayer (really, who hasn't played the demo and fantasized about playing it with their friends?).

In case you don't want to visit the original Reddit post for some reason, we've pasted its contents below the break.

What is the HorseGame?

It's a 3D 3rd person platformer-ish adventure game with elements from Magicka, Ratchet and Clank, MLP.

What it looks like

Why do you need more people?

We have some awesome plans for the upcoming level, but needs a lot of people to make it work. If it is a success, we'll try go for an entire game and storyline.

What people are needed?

  • If you can do any of the following, you could be a huge help for the project:
  • 2D Concept Art
  • 3D Modelling or Animation (Blender preferred)
  • Unity 3D stuff
  • Programming in C# or a similar language
  • Writing
  • Music
  • Level Design
  • Anything else you think might be useful

What is the plan once new people have joined?

After everyone has been interviewed, accepted people will be invited to join our new forum and Trello project management system.

Neverfree

Magical purple alicorns saving the day.

After playing around with Neverfree for a bit I've come to the conclusion that its creator must be quite the Cave Story fan, as this game's mechanics are highly reminiscent of the indie classic (yes, you can use the rapid-firing weapon as a makeshift jetpack). It could honestly make for a really great game if one were to expand upon it and add some more levels, maybe some more varied enemies/bosses that do more than just pace from one end of the room to the other as well. There was also a particularly crowded spot near the final boss that could lead to the player clipping through the wall if they were repeatedly jostled about by enemies, which one should be cautious of if one attempts to play this.

Oh yeah, the game would really benefit from some music/sound effects. I was also quite pleased to see someone using LÖVE for once; it's probably my overall favourite 2D engine and it feels like there's never enough people who actually use it.

Something's up with Twilight.
If you look at this sprite wrong (as I did for my first couple playthroughs) it looks like Twilight is firing lasers out of her gaping pink mouth.

The Amazing Jumping Adventure

This simple game from NzureuzInternational is a game about hopping on clouds and Shadowbolt heads to ascend into the sky. It's basically a ponified clone of Doodle Jump. There's an in-game store with a few things to purchase with your accumulated score, but the options are either aesthetic (a couple of extra characters that are just reskins of Cloud Kicker) or only useful for score attacking ("start at 650 feet" and "add 500 feet to the end score", both of which cost exactly as much as you get out of them). Whether or not you enjoy this will depend on whether or not you enjoy the original game it's based off of. The game also has Android and iOS downloads for taking on the go, if that's your thing.

The Brony Gamers Play promo image

So a while back there were a bunch of people who got together to make Let's Play videos and called their channel Brony Gamers Play. Since February marks their second year of existence they've decided to hold a daily stream over at their Twitch channel and give out various prizes every day, which is pretty sweet if you're the type of person who doesn't mind watching other people play video games with the slight chance of winning something in return.

To qualify for the giveaway you'll have to follow their Twitch channel at http://www.twitch.tv/bronygamersplay/ and talk to them on the chat. There's also a chart detailing as to exactly what games are being given away on each day, which may or may not interest you.

Another Adventure of the Lunarbolts Update

It's been over a year since the last full Adventure of the Lunarbolts update, and as usual they showcase a couple scenes ostensibly about the developers creating this game, albeit while being portrayed as hopeless fools whose props repeatedly explode and are almost entirely unable to accomplish simple tasks. Perhaps there is no Adventure of the Lunarbolts game after all, but this is all an extended joke directed at overhyped projects created by bickering development teams?

There's always the possibility that they'll end up not releasing the game at all, but a documentary of its developers having lunch.

Nightfall's Fourth Beta

Typical Nightfall gameplay

Continuing the grand tradition of Nightfall beta releases being uploaded at the appropriate time comes its fourth beta, with some lovely new additions/improvements such as an Adventure mode, more skills, and various much-needed performance fixes. That's right, you can finally run Nightfall at a fairly decent speed in Wine (although you probably won't be able to run the game at faster speeds, since that is done by increasing the framerate).

For convenience's sake, I've pasted the changelog below the break. Have fun with the new beta!

  • Added position cooldown (for building) after collecting or breaking a structure. This prevents the old 'trick' of instantaneously replacing structures when they're low on health.
  • Light Torches now show their area of effect. Completely necessary to build your strategy!
  • Lower drop rate for potions and power-ups. It just felt like a grocery shop before this!
  • Collecting structures now restores half of its energy cost. Pretty convenient!
  • Added air dash. Double-tap the direction keys while in mid-air to extend your jumps!
  • Enemies' AI improved. No more 'all I do is attack the player' AI.
  • Shadowbolts and some bosses can now stun the player/mercenaries. You better be prepared!
  • Items and structures can now be sold. Need some extra money? Check it out!
  • 'Force night' option now gives some extra money in Normal mode. Forcing night is somewhat rewarding now!
  • Creative mode now features double money gain. It's Creative mode after all.
  • You don't lose lives anymore by falling off the map. Now you can be less worried while playing as a non-pegasi!
  • Added 'Game speed' option (F5). Would you like to fast-forward? Or maybe slow things down a bit!
  • Game is now slightly faster by default. It feels way more active!
  • Added 5 seconds of invulnerability and invincibility after losing a life. Those 5 seconds can make a huge difference!
  • Added Adventure mode (map 1). Explore the pre-made maps, collect the keys and find the exit! That's right, a whole new game mode for when you're tired of building!
  • Added hard mode. For you crazy guys who want the game to be even harder.
  • Added new skills and achievements. You gotta love Wave Attack!
  • Greatly improved overall performance. This took its time, but I'm really glad to say the game's performance has been GREATLY improved. And I mean A LOT.
  • The world now gets regenerated every 25 nights. I've had this idea for quite some time now. The whole world terrain gets re-generated after the 'big' bosses. Your stats, money and inventory don't change, though! Just the terrain and structures. You better start rebuilding before night falls again!
  • Your attacks now bounce off structures. All of them.
  • Other minor changes and bug fixes. And everytime I say this, I mean A LOT of minor changes.
The red points are the changes since the last version of the Third beta (v3.94b), so those of you who have been following the blog will be most likely interested in those.

Unicorn Quest

Coming in to fill another spot in the "pony games comprised entirely of OCs" lineup (which seems to be getting distressingly popular as of late) is a project by the name of Adventures in Equica: Unicorn Quest. The developer, Yotes Games, describes the project as an action-RPG, with a battle system reminiscent of top-down shooters and exploration similar to 2D Zelda titles. The game is still in the conceptual phase at the moment, unfortunately, but the developer promises daily updates for those of you who are interested in the development process. You can read more about the project, including the developer's long-winded explanations of various game concepts, in this post on his blog.

Personally, I'm interested to see how far this project goes; while anyone can write up a pie-in-the-sky game concept without necessarily being able to bring it to fruition, the developer already has some completed projects outside of ponies under his belt, which gives me some confidence for his. Plus, there seems to be a lack of Android pony games that aren't just ports of Flash minigames or clones of other, more popular mobile games; this project has a chance to please that under-served niche in the
fandom.

Ponykart is Recruiting

Some Ponykart concept art

I've been waiting for an opportunity to give Ponykart's unofficial revival project some more exposure for a while now, and now the time has finally come. You see, they're looking for some C++ programmers who also have some experience in C# to help them with the port, along with the usual graphics designers, musicians, and even writers (although I still have no idea why a kart racer would need people dedicated to the latter, especially since characters in said games rarely speak).

Interested? Check out their announcement for details on the requirements and how to submit an application, or just read the copypasted version below the break.

Requirements:

Dev Team: Knowledge of C++ w/ C# as a bonus
Ability to work within a team and to work solo.
*Sample of past coding work is required.
*Past gamework is preferred(provide the name of the fangame/game if you have worked in other fangames/games before)

Graphic Design: Ability to make models and maps within Blender
Ability to draw basic sketches of needed items, stages, etc.
Ability to work solo and within a team.
*Must submit 3+ samples of past work with at least one sample in Blender and one sketching sample.

Be able to write in varying styles
*Must submit a sample of past work.

Music: Be able to work on a collaborative and solo basis.
Be able to produce music within a reasonable time after requested.
*Need a sample of past work.

Send your applications to ravensteam@ponykart.org!

Review: Stop the Bats!

$

0

The pony fangaming scene has a good share of games inspired by particular episodes. Stop the Bats! is one of them, created by Versimer in a mere 8 days using C++ and the SFML library. That's fairly impressive in itself, considering that some fangames use premade engines and still take longer to complete.

But just how good is the game itself? Well, you're gonna have to hit the page break to find out.

The game's premise is fairly simple; you are Applejack, defending your apple trees from bats (and Flutterbat) as they try to suck the nutrients out of their fruits. Your primary weapon is your bucking ability, which takes the bats down in two or three hits. The concept is easy to grasp quickly, which is good because the game doesn't give you much time to learn.

Knocking a whole swarm of bats off of a tree with one attack is oh so satisfying, both visually and audibly.

The first thing that should be noted about the gameplay is that the difficulty ramps up aggressively quickly. While the first couple of waves are easy enough, with bats that are easily fended off, the second variety of bat marks a sharp difficulty spike, as they start to come faster and become harder to take down. Flutterbat's presence also adds to the difficulty, as she will directly interfere with your attempts to take out the bats, knocking you down and costing a few seconds each time. She's difficult to avoid, much less attack directly, while the player is already focused on taking down the bats attacking the apple trees.

Upgrades are required early on for any chance of survival, and they must be chosen carefully, as your coins are limited. They must also be chosen quickly, as the action does not pause while the shop screen is open, leaving bats free to destroy your apple trees - and more annoyingly, leaving Flutterbat free to swoop down and attack you directly, knocking you out of the menu anyway.

This is not an easy game by any stretch of the imagination, and the controls only contribute to the difficulty; attacking requires a long wind-up time, even with the final bucking speed upgrade, and
initiating the attack cuts your jump height, making it difficult to aim at the bats. Thankfully, the attack's range is fairly generous even before upgrades, which helps alleviate the issue somewhat. The lack of a keyboard-based option to purchase upgrades is also a relatively minor inconvenience, and although the game isn't terribly impacted by it, having the option would be convenient for those who prefer to set up JoyToKey bindings and play with a gamepad.

As often as this screen's going to show up, it could stand to be a little flashier. Just sayin'.

In terms of presentation, the game is well-presented but nothing special. The retro aesthetic of the game looks good, and the C64-esque 8-bit rendition of Stop the Bats fits well with the game (even if it starts to get old after a while). However, the lack of any high score logging system is a disappointment in a game which draws it appeal mainly from score attacking; games of this type draw their replayability from being able to compare scores with other players, and even a local "most apples saved" score (or "most waves survived", for those of us who aren't good enough to last the whole game) would give players motivation to keep trying to improve their score. It also irks me that the game closes out entirely after a defeat instead of allowing another try.

Overall, the game is entertaining and well worth a play or two. The concept is simple, addicting, and well-executed, if a bit rough around the edges, and the game is very easy to pick up and play, either for a quick session or for hours at a time. The sheer difficulty may turn some players away, but others will find an enjoyable experience.

Title screen for Where's Derpy? 3.

Effectively a gamification of the fandom's favourite pastime (aside from participating in drama), Where's Derpy? 3's title practically explains itself, and in an entirely unsurprising manner it's pretty much exactly the same as its predecessors except with new screenshots to examine. Not that this is a bad thing, of course: there isn't really much that one could add to the formula anyways aside from recreating each scene from scratch in Flash and animating it (which would probably make things even more difficult).

Yet Another Legends of Equestria Open Server Weekend

The open server weekends for Legends of Equestria are fun and all, but have you ever wished they came around just a bit more often? If so, you're in luck; the development team has just announced another one, only a few months after the last.

This time, it corresponds with their appearance at BABSCon, running from April 18th to the 20th. That leaves you with just over a month to get ready for the weekend of getting hopelessly lost in the Everfree Evershade Forest or whatever you play this game to do. Logging in will hopefully be much easier this time, since they fixed an issue relating to that toward the end of the previous open server weekend. See you guys there!

Raycord Legends Teaser

Some might question why the pony fandom needs yet another 2D platformer when it already has a truckload of them, but this one has an art style reminiscent of the more recent Rayman games and features Discord as its protagonist, a rather intriguing decision to say the least. Hopefully it manages to meet its projected release date of "somewhere in 2014" and isn't just a glorified "scroll past pretty backgrounds" program with minimal gameplay, but eh. The fandom's pulled off some pretty ridiculous things in the past, so why not this?

In case you're wondering why this post is a couple hours late, let's just say that I was somewhat distracted by one Fluffy Wolf Vinyl.

Pinkie's Balloon Trip

Considering what's plastered across her flanks, putting Pinkie Pie in a game about balloons seems like a no-brainer. This game from Brian Bullock (which is listed as a beta, despite feeling quite complete) is basically a clone of the NES's Balloon Trip, but with ponies and an online scoreboard. The latter does wonders for replayability of the game, even if the mechanics of lower scores on a name overriding older, higher scores is a bit irritating. Regardless, the game is well-built for a clone game, and like the original, is a fantastic way to spend a few moments if you don't mind dying a lot.

Super Smash Ponies Looking For Animators & Voice Actresses

Rainbow Dash in animated form

Surprisingly enough, Super Smash Ponies appears to be still alive and its developers are apparently looking for some people to help them finish Rainbow Dash so they can move on to the better ponies. Not all that exciting, but eh. It's a slow month, so if you happen to be one of those rare voice actresses or animators who aren't always busy with stuff (I'm looking at you, Nicoboss) perhaps you should consider checking this out.

You could read the original announcement at their site, or just head on below the break for some copypasta.

Hello all! We’re still at development, but currently we’re in need of a helping hoof for two things.

Thing one:
We’re looking for animators and digital artists who wish to build puppets and animate character designs for Super Smash Ponies.
Currently we’re working on Rainbow Dash’s character animation. If you are at all interested in animating for Super Smash Ponies, or if you’re a digital artist interested in learning how to vector and animate, send us an email at smashponiesdev@gmail.com, subject title starting with Animations, with your Skype name and a sample of your work.
And thing two:
We are looking for Voice Actresses! This casting call is for the roles of Applejack, and Rainbow Dash. At this point in time we are not requesting voices for other characters.
Here are the instructions for submitting your auditions to us:

  • Create a video, or an MP3 track of you perfroming [sic] your best Applejack or Rainbow Dash impersonation, minimum of 30 seconds and upload it to Youtube or SoundCloud. (Performances on any hosting services other than the two specified will not be considered.)
    • If you plan to audition for both characters, please record separate performances per character.
  • For the performance itself, there is no set script; say what you like; though, using lines from the actual show will also be a huge help as well. We also encourage in grunts, noises, and attack sounds into the mix as well.
  • Then, once you’ve done that, send an email to smashponiesdev@gmail.com with the subject title beginning with Voice Acting.
  • Include the following in the email: your name/alias, a secondary form of contact (second email or Skype), and a link to your youtube/soundcloud recording. An optional and not required item is a link to your voice acting demo, if you have one. It would also help greatly.
The deadline for VA submissions is Saturday, March 29, 11:59 PM PST.
And there you have it! We hope to see new faces, and we look forward to hearing your auditions. Best of luck to all!

Doli Incapax: Horse Lawyer

With the popularity of the Phoenix Wright series (and the availability of case creators based on the games), it's no surprise that we've seen quite a few projects centered on combining the concept with My Little Pony. Among those is this little gem from Zoo977. Doli Incapax: Horse Lawyer is a charming one-case game made with one of the countless case creators, and like any good game of its type, the writing is top-notch. It's a game filled with OCs (in fact, outside of a small role from Rarity, no official ponies appear in the whole thing), but the characters are explored in a depth that rivals the games Horse Lawyer draws its inspiration from, and the game itself is equally enthralling.

I'll probably be getting into a more in-depth review later when I have the time, but there's another story-centric game sitting in the submission box, as well as a few personal projects of mine to get to, so you'll have to take my word for it that the game is definitely worth the couple of hours of entertainment it gives you.

EquestriaBound

Given the current popularity of both Earthbound and My Little Pony, it was inevitable that eventually someone would mod ponies into the former, and now the deed has finally been done. I'm not sure about the mod's quality, but at least it should give you folks something to play while you wait for Curse of the Lost Kingdom's first part to be released on April 30th.

So sit back, patch your Earthbound ROM and enjoy the ride!

It's a rock.

Ever the ambitious fellow, Vanni decided to release a tie-in game to the ever-popular Goat Simulator (also being released today) featuring Rarity's waifu as its main character, doing what he normally does when he isn't being showered with affection from Maud. Some may find the content a bit lacking, although I personally think that it's an excellent representation of Tom's daily life including the bits where he does his own stunts and attends all the award ceremonies his voice actor has been been invited to lately. I'd suggest that future releases add in a realtime day/night cycle and possibly some wildlife to occasionally appear in the background, but as its stands right now this is probably one of the better avant-garde fangames we'll see this year (with the possible exception of BFS, which I'll be posting about in a bit).

Rumour has it that a sequel is coming to the App Store featuring unlockable outfits. Look for it in Summer 2014!

Tom has been contacted in the hopes that he would consent to an interview on the subject of his experiences as a video game protagonist, although we have not yet received a response from him.

Review: BFS

A load of horse crap.

As his previous efforts have shown us, Vanni is determined to redefine the way we see RPGs, and to accomplish his vision he has even gone so far as to program it from scratch in C instead of going about the usual route of whipping up crap in RPG Maker like a mere commoner. This may prove he's no scrub, sure, but even the best of developers can slip up sometimes, so is this an example of such?

Pony fans will definitely want to check this one out, so read on below the break for my thoughts on it.

Reality ensues upon starting BFS' executable: this is a game, and thus it must load stuff. This may seem rather unpleasant, but upon the fourth or fifth playthrough the average player will get used to it and maybe even come to enjoy the loading, as it gives one time to prepare oneself for the incredible experience ahead. It also helps that it has the decency to show you exactly what it happens to be loading at the time, giving one a truly visible indication of its progress.

I'd consider BFS to be an example of modern art, really. Gameplay is deceptively simplistic, with its smooth The Matrix-esque scrolling effects having a rather soothing effect on one's mind, but there's an odd sort of beauty to it that one is hard-pressed to find in any other game of recent memory. One could compare it to NetHack or Dwarf Fortress in a certain sense due to various aesthetic similarities, or even the majority of Lego Island 2 if one is so inclined. It's definitely a great way to wind down and blow off steam after a long day of hard work.

Learning the plot isn't exactly essential to this game, although from what I've been informed it involves the marriage of Queen Chrysalis to King Sombra, and their ensuing invasion on the Crystal Empire. It doesn't appear to have much relevance to the actual gameplay, though, as the story is unveiled through subtle environmental cues that casual observers will easily miss upon a first playthrough. Some might complain about this, but I honestly don't mind all that much. It's nice to have a game every once in a while that respects the player's intelligence and expects them to figure things out on their own for once.

 B

S for us Linux users though, since the game somehow doesn't have a Linux build even though it's written in C and uses multiplatform libraries. Ah well, at least it should run well enough in Wine and can thus provide an interestingly introspective experience for users of all operating systems. Be sure to thank Vanni for his wonderful creation, and maybe check out his groundbreaking Fnagame while you're at it.

The Saga of Dark Skyes

A photograph of Sam Hyde

This here is Sam Hyde, a failed internet celebrity turned scammer whose life basically revolved around trying to sucker money out of other peoples' pockets to pay his rent instead of actually working for himself. He fancied himself as a sort of master troll who could do nothing wrong, and his next big scheme targeted whom he believed to be the internet's least intelligent people: the brony community. Several months in the making, this plan was a surefire way to make him some quick cash and immortalize himself as a legendary figure amongst his adoring fans...

...Except he didn't. The plan completely backfired, and as of now the Dark Skyes Kickstarter has been cancelled after most of the original backers pulled out. What lead to such a carefully planned-out project to fail so dramatically? You can find the story below the break, along with a bunch of screencaps.

A screencap of MDE's facebook.
(Source)
On the 20th of December, Sam publicly announced his plans to create a Kickstarter for a fake pony dating sim on the Facebook page of his mediocre YouTube "comedy" group, Million Dollar Extreme, and thus had already doomed his project to failure by providing evidence of its invalidity. He also uploaded a casting call on YouTube, but at least had the sense to make it private to keep prying eyes from finding it (not that he succeeded, of course). Early reactions from his limited fanbase seemed to be extremely enthusiastic for the most part, since the majority of them despised the pony community and were of the opinion that this was the perfect opportunity to take those bronies down a peg.

Several months passed as Sam and his small crew of voice actors created their Kickstarter pitch at a snail's pace, but they lacked one very important crew member to ensure that their ruse would be successful: an artist. For that purpose they paid a woman named Pukey Pony to draw "concept art" for the visual novel's characters that supposedly wasn't going to be used in the final product, a decision that would later come back to haunt them in the months to come.

On March 6, they were finally ready to put their plan into action, and uploaded their first Kickstarter project under the title "Dark Skyes -- an EPIC brony dating sim", along with a 6 minute video and some mockup screenshots. With positive press from major pony news outlets being released shortly afterwards and several thousand dollars worth of donors, success seemed even more sure for MDE than ever before.

That is, until the frequently misunderstood anons of /mlp/ became extremely suspicious at the trailer's distinct lack of any actual gameplay. All it contained was some guy talking in a mask and cringeworthy samples of voice acting playing alongside static pictures of ponies on abstract backgrounds, which is very unusual for a project claimed to be 95% complete. This lead to the discovery of various incriminating screenshots, some of which were compiled by Horse News' analysis of the Kickstarter. This was followed by another post a day after the first, which was extremely well received and lead to over $2000 in funding being pulled by concerned backers.
A comic immortalizing this humourous tale.
(Source)
An increasingly desperate Sam Hyde, afraid of not being able to earn his $7500 and finding that the pony community was a bit too intelligent for his liking, turned to 4chan and uploaded an unintentionally hilarious plea for them to donate to his Kickstarter anyways because he apparently expected them to appreciate his "sense of humour" or something. This was unsurprisingly met with widespread derision and mockery of the angry little man, along with Pukey Poney publicly pulling support from the project in an incredibly damaging blow to the scam that would later lead to her being interviewed by PonyToast of Horse News and effectively proving beyond any reasonable doubt that Dark Skyes was by no means a genuine visual novel.

After this, Dark Skyes was effectively defeated; no amount of sockpuppeting by MDE or its fans could salvage the Kickstarter now. After much pressure by potential backers a demo video was supposedly released, although it wasn't very convincing for a game that had supposedly been in development for four years (longer than the total existence of Friendship of Magic and its fandom!). There was also an attempt by MDE to artificially inflate the amount of donations received after most backers had already left, but with 12 hours left on the clock Sam finally decided to call it quits and pull the plug on his flawed dream after having made a mockery of himself and everybody else associated with MDE.

So what have we learned about Sam Hyde through all of this? He's an extremely lazy and pathetic man who takes 3 months to set up a half-assed scam, and screws it all over by publicly bragging about it beforehand due to his insatiable desire for attention. Now he's even poorer than before, utterly friendless outside of his small circlejerk, and best of all his actions are forever archived on the internet to ward off any potential employers who would consider hiring him.

Also, I'd like to thank the anons of /mlp/ for uncovering this and Horse News for their phenomenal coverage of the scandal as it unfolded, along with Pukey Poney for her assistance in the matter as well. Derpibooru is also an excellent source for screencaps if you'd like more info on exactly what took place: just search "dark skyes".

Mind you, there's still more of Dark Skyes to come, although that'll deserve a post of its own...
