Bronies Fighting Ponies: The Magic of Friendship

Happy Saturday, all!

In case any of you are still hazy on the details of Mane6's cease and desist from a while back, Polygon has released an in-depth special feature chronicling the story of the project and the takedown. The piece also goes into the reasons behind Hasbro C&Ds, covers Lauren Faust's involvement in mane6's new project, and puts a really positive spin on the Brony community in general.

Check it out here!

A screenshot of the Ponu News application.

No, we don't have an Android app yet, but some guy named Tom Jin has made an app titled Ponu News that compiles news and fanworks from around the ponynet and packages it all inside their convenient app. In a recent update they added Equestria Gaming to their Entertainment category, so if you want to read our stuff on the go you can do by picking up their app over at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hummingtap.ponu. They also have support for other fansites like DerpyHooves News and Fimfiction, in case you're interested.

As for you iOS and Windows Phone users...you'll still be stuck with the lousy mobile version of our site. Sorry!

TEMNO Tech Demo

The TEMNO banner from their website.

We've seen TEMNO before via videos and whatnot, but now there's a playable tech demo for the game in case you want to try it out. Sadly the developer has said that he's cut the creepier elements of the game, but I still think that the final product should be fairly interesting. As to what I think of the game so far...I really can't say, as I haven't been able to get TEMNO working in Wine yet. Hopefully this will be resolved in the future, but in the meantime enjoy the game!

Oh yeah, and the developers has requested that if you find any bugs that you report them to this email: temnogame@centrum.cz.

Little Pony Big War

Man, when May assessment season hits the fandom, it hits hard. This time of year, a lot of game developers (and us blogponies, too) are completely pinned down, but things should pick up speed as summer approaches.

Baejongkim's Little Pony Big War is part strategy, part tower defense. In battle, the player must manage his resources, building mining bunnies and sending out troops to counter an onslaught of Diamond Dogs. Stylistically similar to the Flash classic Age of War, the goal is to build up enough troops to successfully destroy your enemy's base. The handy mini-map displays an overview of units on the screen and the status of the midfield turret.

Although the basic premise is simple, Little Pony Big War has more than enough late-game content to keep you playing. Extra hero units (members of the mane 6) and infantry can be bought and upgraded outside of battle, and are a huge help during the later levels. Overall, it's one of the better flash games I've played recently - Enjoy!

Game: MLP Matching Is Magic

$

Some games grab you with graphics and a flashy intro, and others gradually grow on you until you're hooked. Surprisingly, I found MLP: Matching Is Magic to be the latter. The game revolves around a very simple concept: assemble pony-containing blocks into groups of three or more to eliminate them, a la Shariki (Bejeweled).

The twist is that there's no time constraint - rather, the number of pony types on the board increases based upon your previous matches until the rather easy game becomes an impossible one. Whenever you match a group of three for the first time, a block containing a new pony appears in its place, until you've worked your way through the Mane Six and beyond!

RPG Maker VX: War of Harmony Demo and MLP Starting Pack

$

Ahhh, RPG Maker VX. As an easy framework for creating Pony RPGs, it's spawned its fair share of poorly conceived games. Fortunately, the degree to which custom scripting and development is possible has allowed the development of several outstanding projects as well!

Regardless, RPG Maker is still a great engine for new developers to experiment with. Today, we have a starting resource pack and the demo for the upcoming project War of Harmony Part 4 below the break!

Download and install the RPG VX Ace zip file first!

War of Harmony Part 4 is a fledgling project set apart by its custom pony sprites and implementation of a karma system (good and evil actions progress the story in different directions). The spriting isn't yet complete (a fact lampshaded by Pinkie Pie at the beginning of the demo) but what currently exists is neatly scripted and shows promise.

Currently, the demo has enough material to keep you occupied for about an hour. If you like the game, give developer Marshall Ruffy a holler via Twitter or Facebook - he's looking for recruits!

If the large number of RPG Maker VX fangames out there have inspired you to make one for yourself, you might be daunted by the amount of resources needed - you'll need to accrue a large number of pony sprites, tilesets, a pony-themed audio library, and more.

Fortunately, the preceding starter pack contains sprites and portraits for the Mane Six and many background ponies, the Celestia Medium Redux font and some audio files for easy access. Happy developing!

Princess Civilization

Princess Civilization

So far this month has been rather slow for fangame-related news, as most of us have been busy preparing for our final exams and whatnot. Thankfully it appears that a few developers have been able to sneak in some time for development; for example, some guy named Petr Hudecek is getting close to completing his Princess Civilization game, but needs voice actors for Spike and Princess Celestia before he can do so. In my opinion he could probably use some better spriters too, because frankly the terrain looks awful. Gameplay should come before graphics, yes, but your average gamer tends to notice a game's art first and will make their decision on whether to play it or not based on how appealing its graphics are.

Interested in helping Petr out with his project? Check out his design document over at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PEARgE6fq206J_9PI9NmxRx1qJ6VePRwuJ6rs4M1xY8/edit, and then you can send him an email over at petrhudecek2010@gmail.com.

Pony Craft: Tainted Skies Demo

$

At long last, a playable release from the developer of Pony Craft: Tainted Skies! For those not yet in the know, Pony Craft is a project designed to combine two genres: RTS and RPG (also, pony.) More after the break!

The demo release lacks story, but shows off a clean real-time strategy engine well on its way to completion. Playing as Twilight, the player must make their way through an ominous maze, dodging around skeletal ponies while rounding up errant pegasi. Fortunately, if you're tired of running, there are other options.

Twilight: "It's like a rockslide! On fire!"

Besides the rockslide spell, various orders are possible for your units: each pegasus can take off and land, and Twilight can cast a shield dome. A commandable blob of Gak hidden in the field has it's own unique personality. In typical RTS fashion, Twilight barks affirmatives whenever given a new order, alternately praising your leadership and questioning your judgement.

A project FAQ is available on the Pony Craft blog, and you can follow other updates via TumblrYouTube, or this regularly updated thread. Game forums are located here, and you can send your feedback to mlpponycraft@gmail.com. For the development-oriented among you, the (open) source can be found over on BitBucket. Phew. Enjoy!

Fallout Equestria RPG Trailer

It has been quite the day for 3D RPGs we haven't heard from in a while! The Fallout Equestria RPG team has released a new update video, displaying the features they've been working on over the last few months.

Notable among the new developments are day/night cycling, a full character statistics, inventory, and skills system, and the ability to outline complex paths for your character during combat. Hopefully, we'll get a demo or release date in the near future!

Shattered Limits

Just now, I'll bet you were sitting there, all blue, waiting for some high-speed, log-jumping, boulder-evading, Temple-Run-style 3D pony action. If you weren't, you should have been. Regardless, that's what you get.

Shattered Limits is a simple, addictive dodge-the-obstacle type game set in an endless world of boulders, thorns, and other obstacles. Run your customizable pony avatar until he or she drops, and then do it again, and again, and again...

The download's a little slow, but the game's worth your while! Have at it.

Nightfall Gameplay Footage

Nightfall

A couple days ago the folks over at Silly Mare Games (creators of Stroll and Harmony PCG) started working on another fangame they call "Nightfall", and from the released gameplay footage it appears to be some kind of sidescrolling strategy game. As this game is still in early development the final product is probably going to be quite different from the preview here, which is probably a good thing because in my opinion it looked a tad dull. The stock sprites probably have something to do with it, and the background looked a bit too bright for a game of this sort. After all, shouldn't a game called "Nightfall" look sort of dark? Not dark as in "the forces of darkness", mind you (although the team certainly could go in that direction), but more "it was a dark and stormy night".

Also, Zeeraw still hasn't released the Cloudsdale developer portal. Get to it, man! It's really going to come in handy with this redesign of the Arcade...

Super Lesbian Horse RPG Demo

Fluttershy by her house.

Everybody loves shipping for some reason. I'm not entirely sure why that is, but some weirdo named Bobby Schroeder decided to make a silly RPG centered around the magic of shipping. Lo and behold, everybody thought he was bloody brilliant, and now he's made such splendid progress that his game actually has a demo (with a Mac port). Most fangames, even the ones assembled by big teams, don't make nearly as much progress as Bob has in this short period; in my opinion, he deserves a reward. Somebody go buy him a horse or something to make him feel good.

My thoughts on this lesbian horse preview thing are after the break.

In case it clear from the get-go, SLHRPG is intended to be a non-serious game about female horses kissing and going on all kinds of stupid adventures (like Twilight converting Rainbow Dash's basement into a dungeon and fighting censored spoiler enemies). The demo itself is quite short, but quite dialogue-heavy and contains plenty of weird and wonderful easter eggs. If you really wanted to you could beat it in 5 minutes, but you would really be missing out. Several of them made me laugh out loud, which is extremely rare for a video game. Many games will make you chuckle a little inside, but Super Lesbian Horse RPG is overwhelmingly funny. The weird music and ridiculous character portraits probably had quite a bit to do with it too.

Fluttershy blabbing about shit.
You should get that looked into, Fluttershy.
For the most part the visual style is highly reminiscent of Mother 3, although sadly it lacks the swirly psychedelic battle backgrounds. The game has a decidedly retro feel to it, one that is only disturbed by the antialiased text and the decidedly higher-resolution character portraits. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as SLHRPG is supposed to be a big joke, not an authentic Gameboy Color game. The custom pony sprites are a huge plus; they are a very nice break from those blasted desktop ponies and are positively adorable.

As for the battle system...basically, Bobby just reused the default RPG Maker VX system. None of Earthbound's fancy rolling hitpoints or anything, but at least there aren't any random encounters. Since that the enemies have been spoilered out I can't comment on their designs, but given that the overworld sprites seem to indicate that they are standard slime monsters we can assume that they are, in fact, slime monsters. Nice try, Bobbie Sue. Try harder next time!

So that's it. I'll post a full review when the game comes out in June, but in the meantime enjoy the demo!

Convention announcement: Everfree Northwest and Fiesta Equestria!

It seems that certain members of the Legends of Equestria development team are attending the Everfree Northwest and Fiesta Equestria conventions (which you probably already figured out if you read the article's title and looked at the post header). Aside from just hosting panels and showing off the game like they usually do, they're also bringing a pre-alpha build along for attendees to play around with. Shame I won't be able to attend, with me being stuck up here in Alberta and all. Maybe I should go see if there's any leftover moose meat in the freezer...

Want more detailed information? The team also wrote up an official press release, which you can find below the break.

Legends of Equestria attending Everfree Northwest and Fiesta Equestria!

Staff from Legends of Equestria, a massively multiplayer online game set in a My Little Pony-inspired universe, will be attending both Fiesta Equestria! and Everfree Northwest. In addition to presenting panels, representatives of the Legends of Equestria team will give convention attendees an opportunity to play the game in its current pre-alpha state. Convention-specific quests within the game will be available to those who attend.

The team members who will be attending Fiesta Equestria! in Houston, Texas, on June 28th through 30th, are:

  • Bloomberg - Editor-in-Chief. Bloomberg has been on the project for the past two years, where he now serves as the allegedly deciduous writing team leader.
  • Blue Ink - Writer. A professional editor, Blue is the second-in-command of the writers and has been working on the game since last year.
  • TheGrandFunkasaurus - 3D modeler. The grandest of all dinosaurs, Funk is a live sound technician in real life who has worked on the game for the past two years.
  • Tekner - Programmer. Tekner is a self-employed game designer and developer, and has been working on Legends of Equestria for one year.

For more information about Fiesta Equestria! feel free to visit their website at www.fiestaequestria.com/

The team members who will be attending Everfree Northwest in Seattle, Washington, on July 5th through 7th, are:

  • AnyaSmash - Concept Art leader. A long-time lover of tea, Anya has been working on Legends of Equestria for nearly two years and is a graphic design student.
  • Cerebrate - Programming leader. Cerebrate owes Anya $5.50 and some burnt banana bread, and has been working on the project for nearly two years.
  • Kit - Graphic Art leader. Kit teaches children how to make computer games and works with horses, and has been working on the project for nearly two years.
  • Ryan Scanlon - 3D modeler. Ryan has been on the team for seven months, and has modeled several lovely buildings for Canterlot within that time frame.

Review: The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000

Play it Here!
The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 is a game back from last summer that's somehow never gotten its own review until now. This game, made in the Unity engine by Texel, features art and design by egophiliac and music by Whitetail. It's a fast-paced game, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a play. Note: you'll have to have Unity Web Player installed before it'll work. Read more after the break...

The gist of the game is this - as the Apple family, make as much cider as possible in the time limit to beat the conniving, but ever industrious Flim Flam brothers. To make cider, you must press arrow keys in the correct order as fast as you can. Stringing combos together is the most important thing here - if you avoid making mistakes, you'll be churning out cider barrels like nobody's business.

The game features Easy, Medium, Hard, and Zen modes. From my experience playing, these ratings are pretty accurate - Easy mode is very easy, Medium is a bit of a challenge, but still very manageable, and Hard is really quite difficult. It's easy to get a good combo-rhythm going, but, especially in Hard mode (which is 3 minutes long), your hands get fatigued and you can easily get thrown off. To unlock Hard mode, you have to beat Medium, and there is variance between each difficulty gameplay-wise, so it's worthwhile to play each of them.

I can't believe Spitfire didn't help them out...wait - wrong episode.
For such a simple concept, this game's professionalism is very impressive. All the little design details add up to make a really enjoyable game. From the music detuning whenever you make a mistake, to the arrow combos actually representing the motions involved in each picture, this game is full of intricacy.

The work of egophiliac (the amazing artist behind Moonstuck and Slice of Life), and Whitetail (one of the music composers for Mane6), really make this game shine, in my opinion. Add to that some great gameplay from Texel, and you've got yourself a really fun game, which is why I give it...

Update time! Today we've got a trailer from the MLP: Elements of Harmony team and a long-awaited reveal from Starswirl Academy. You know where to click!

Elements of Harmony Steam Group (and Download)

The trailer above is for the hardest of the hard core - those of you who have put in the time and leveled above 85 in MLP: Elements of Harmony v.1.5. The video shows off footage from the new dungeon, which will contain seven new bosses.

Yep, the image is huge. That's because today the Zap Apple project released final character art for the mane six for the first time - a big step for a visual novel's development. I haven't been following this project closely, but so far the art's looking great. Check it out (warning: some of the images are a little saucy.)

If there's anything which could make me more disappointed about missing this convention, this is it!

This year, Everfree NW will welcome Legends of Equestria, My Little Investigations, and MLP: Roleplaying is Magic, among others. Additionally, Everfree NW and the Gaming Colts will host a game jam. Find the full press release after the break!

Who doesn’t like a good game from time to time? We have no idea! That’s why Everfree Northwest is delighted to announce the following gaming events and guests.

- Crystal Games Challenge -

The Gaming Colts will be hosting their very first game jam—Crystal Games Challenge—in conjunction with Everfree Northwest in order to support and nurture the practice of game development within the My Little Pony fandom.
For those unfamiliar with the term ‘game jam’, a game jam is an event where people come together and make a video game or non-digital game like a board or card game. Participants rapidly prototype games and game designs. Everyone involved shares a common theme as well as restrictions with a centralized goal. Developers are asked to create a game from beginning to end in a predetermined amount of time (maximum of 48 hours). While brief, the short time span helps encourage creative thinking resulting in small but innovative and experimental games. Such exercises help introduce new ideas into the gaming industry and help game makers new and old hone their skills.
The event will begin on June 22nd at noon Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) and end on June 24th at noon PDT. All are welcome to join in. The challenge will be run online with details being passed out by the Gaming Colts on theirwebsite,Facebook, andTwitter. Then, working with the Everfree Northwest Gaming Division, The Gaming Colts will showcase many of the submissions from the game jam in the convention’s Game Room during the con.
For more information, check out theGaming Colts website,Facebook, orTwitter, as they will be frequently updated with more information as it becomes available.

Iridescent Pony Warrior Beta

Download Iridescent Pony Warrior

Super robot hyper team pony force go! ...at least, that's what the game Iridescent Pony Warrior sounds like to me. I'm told the name is more or less a parody of bullet hell naming conventions in general.

Iridescent Pony Warrior is actually a bullet avoider, meaning you spend more time dodging the flood of projectiles as you don't have to aim yours toward the boss. The full version, roughly slated for the beginning of Season 4, will contain more complete mechanics, and a variety of RPG elements to make the game more than just blasting.

Don't write the game off as easy, though. True to its roots, even the demo of Iridescent Pony Warrior contains an additional set of challenges after the completion of hard mode. In the beta, a single shot will knock you out of the sky, so you've got to be on your toes. Have at it!

More Nightfall Stuff

It seems that more progress has been made with Nightfall, as can be seen in the new gameplay video. Several new features have been implemented, such as a rudimentary Day/Night cycle. It's not nearly as nice as the one in Pony Wings, but at least it should do well enough for now. One of the developers also told us that the game will have bosses, which should be rather...interesting. Frankly, there aren't enough fangames with bosses these days, and this disappoints me.

I would write more, but I have a headache. Instead of writing more interesting stuff, I shoved some copypasta from Silly Mare Games below the break. Enjoy?

Hello there!
I'm Night Breeze from Silly Mare Games, creator of a few previous games like Stroll, My Little Rhythm and Harmony PCG, and I'm glad to announce my new project: Nightfall.
Nightfall is a 2D platforming game featuring Pinkie Pie, but it's not the usual idea of a platformer. You can think about it as a mix of Terraria or Minecraft and a tower defense game, if you may, but it's still not quite like that either.
I'll give you a quick description (and I excuse myself beforehand, as English isn't my main language).
In this game, the main objective so far is to survive. You play as Pinkie in a huge randomly generated world, and along the day you may explore, collect items and build yourself a fortress with many different type of blocks, being dirt, stone, different kinds of turrets, trees, and the like. After 5 real-life minutes, the night comes, and the peaceful ambience of the game goes away. A swarm of enemies will try to get you, destroying everything along the way. You'll have to survive until the sun rises again, by killing the enemies, strategically building your fortress and using the different blocks, collecting money to upgrade your stats, and more. Each night that comes, the enemies will be harder and more frequent, featuring even bosses along the way, and you'll have to strategically develop your character and building stats along it to survive.
Anyway, that's mainly it! The game is still under development, everything is subject to change, and I'd love to know what you think.
Be sure to check out the embed video if you haven't yet to see the game yourself, and stay tuned for more updates!
Over and out!
