How do you guys feel about episode-themed minigames? Really, that amazing? Well, if you insist. Apparently, Sparklepeep over on DeviantArt has a whole series planned.

Nothing too fancy here - blast the Pinkie clones with Twilight lasers while avoiding the original. Have at it!

Super Smash Ponies Update #3

Zilven Sparkle and the team behind Super Smash Ponies have decided to scrap their current work and start from scratch - so that they can make the game bigger and better than ever! Looks like Fighting is Magic may have some competition to look out for. Screenshots of the new look after the break!

The stage pictured is Battlefield from Super Smash Bros. Brawl in all it's ponified glory. More images like this should be popping up on the project's DeviantArt soon.

Early shading tests.

I have to say, the new graphics look pretty impressive. The project's rapid expansion has produced a need for new voice actors - if you can voice Pinkie Pie, Rarity, or Twilight, or want to help out in another way, contact the team via Tumblr, Twitter, DA, or Youtube.

This has been on the posting roster for a few days, but our tactical posting bot dropped the ball. For those unaware, the notorious futzi01 has created the first game to feature the much-lauded sport of wife tossing! Hurl Cadance as far as possible, collecting crystal hearts to stay airborne. Go! Gravity Pony

Happy U.S. Thanksgiving, everypony! Regardless of where you live, November's as good a time as any to eat good food and play pony video games. Because that's what this holiday is for... right?

Anyhow, Zilven Sparkle's whipped up a gravity-based pony minigame to keep you occupied. Help Twilight master gravity spells, and try to avoid falling to your doom for as long as possible. The game appears to use the same animation as the upcoming Super Smash Ponies, and looks great in practice. If you've got .exe download problems, the HTML5 version can be found here, although lag and graphical issues are to be expected.

Minty Fresh Adventure II Preview

I have many fond memories of Mark Sprague's Pony Platforming Project series, and the first game in the series happens to be the subject of my very first review on Equestria Gaming.  However it has been over half a year since the third game was released, and I had somehow nearly forgotten about the series when Mark sent me a couple emails saying that the wonderful folks over at The Brony Show had played a demo of the unreleased fourth game and gave us permission to put the entire series up on the Arcade (yay!). He also let me try out the tech demo and while I'm not allowed to share it with you folks I can tell you a little bit about the game and show you a couple screenshots. Of course you could always watch episode 76 of The Brony Show and skip ahead 32 minutes for the interview/gameplay footage, but in case you don't want to sit through all that you can head on below the break and see what we've got.

ERMAHGERD WHARTER

Minty Fresh Adventure II takes place after A Canterlot Wedding pt. 2 in which the brainwashed bridesmaids Colgate, Lyra, and Twinkleshine are distracted by the thrown bouquet and throw themselves into the depths of the cave to find it. Being disposable background ponies nopony sends out a searching party for them, so they'll have to make their way out of another cave filled with monsters who probably like nothing more then the taste of canned unicorn meat. As to what else the story consists of I have no idea, but given that an unfinished Cerberus was exhibited I'm guessing that Tartarus might be visited or referenced ingame.

This could really use some more hypnopony.

In its current state the demo lacks enemies and just features a couple locations that you can walk around in, but it already has all three characters working and some really sweet tilesets. I'd definitely say that Mark has gotten better at properly utilizing parallax scrolling since the last entry, and it makes the environments feel less static then before. New to the series is a spellcasting system, with which each character can use their special abilities by pressing the C key to open up a menu. Most of the spells aren't usable just yet such as Lyra's telekinetic hand, but an OoT-style harp is usable and lets the player play songs that will effect the gameplay to a certain degree. Opening the pause menu also reveals that RPG-style equipment and levels are planned to be implemented, which should add a rather interesting dynamic to the series.

Well, there's not really much more that I can say about the game except that I am very impressed with it and I'm looking forward to reviewing the final product. If you want to ask Mark questions about his game or chat with fellow players you can visit the game's PonyChan thread over at http://www.ponychan.net/chan/collab/res/36324.html. In the meantime have some Lyra on her hind legs!

Ahhh, it's good to be back!

While I was off hunting Wompas in the hinterland, Sparklepeep over on DeviantArt released the next season 3 minigame. Nothing fancy: just whack Babs Seed to keep her in the air, and try to launch her as high as possible! For the first half of last Saturday's episode, I was ready to smack her myself.

So, how does the whole minigame-an-episode concept sit with you? Do current pony games in small doses hit the spot, or do they waste your time? Tell us in the comments.

Bonus: find the season opener minigame here.

So, I know you guys like Super Smash Bros. Brawl built around ponies - how about ponies inserted into Brawl? Spearheaded by turbobear, this project currently includes several skins for Rainbow Dash (including Scootaloo and WonderBolt) and a variety of moves. While it's far from finished, you can download the current build here.

The project is currently in growth mode: the team is looking for an animator, a modeler, and an additional code monkey to finish up Dash and begin work on the rest of the Mane 6. If you're interested, or just want to follow the project, the official thread can be found here. Have fun!

There seems to be a decent portion of the fandom that is addicted to playing Canterlot Siege, and Nitrouspony has decided to feed their addiction with an Android port of the game. Now I don't play Canterlot Siege myself that much, but for those that do (and aren't iOS users, who'll have to wait a bit longer for a port) this must be a godsend. Interested in giving the port a shot? You can download the .apk file over at http://sta.sh/0k8abuu6ijo. Have fun!

Pony Tactics: Salvation

Pony Tactics: Salvation
For some reason it seems that nearly all of the of non-Flash My Little Pony fangames are RPGs, and most of which are announced are never heard from again and forgotten. This is probably due to the fact that making a decent RPG takes a lot of time and effort, which often proves to be too much for many developers to handle. A small team calling themselves "Slammin' is Jammin'" have recently announced their upcoming RPG and released a promotional video that shows off some interesting concept art and...less than impressive gameplay (although to be fair the game is still in the pre-alpha stages, so that is to be expected).

Will Pony Tactics: Salvation ever be released? I have no idea, but you can find their promo video and some more information on the game after the break.

From the information that has been given out so far Pony Tactics: Salvation will be a roleplaying game with a very heavy focus on tactics (obviously), taking place soon after Discord came to power. The player controls a herd of common villagers who decided to flee from the Lord of Chaos and find a better place to live, while beating the crap outta various giant monsters along the way. Celestia and Luna's origin story also plays a major part in the story, as does the discovery of the elements of harmony.

According to Slammin' "Unlike most tactics RPGs Salvation does not have a classic jobs system. Instead each unit falls uniquely into a role, with skills and abilities maintained by the story instead of jobs/levels. Smart uses of a team's abilities and items is rewarded, as health/mana is not fully replenished after each battle." I may be no veteran when it comes to tactical RPGs but that does sound kind of interesting to me, although how the final product shall turn out is yet to be seen.

The game is being made in Unity3D, and due to the fact that they're not listing Linux as a platform I'm going to assume that they are not using Unity 4. The sprites used in the trailer appear to be only temporary placeholders (thank God), and due to some of listed positions on the "join our crew" page it appears that the ponies themselves will be drawn as 2D sprites in contrast to the 3D world. This is quite unlike most other pony RPGs which either rely exclusively on sprites such as The Lost Kingdom or use only 3D models like Questria; the former of which is far more common.

Any thoughts? Leave them in the comments!

Magic Duel Episode Minigame Compilation Post

Sweet mother of Celestia, that was quite an episode last weekend. In just a few days, it's spawned loads of fan content - including games, of course. Astounded? Don't thank me, thank sparklepeep, FearlessPie, and SylrePony! More after the break.

Working on a rock farm? Sounds like a great central mechanic for a game. Relive Trixie Lulamoon's time in poverty, and earn a million bits to purchase the alicorn amulet and defeat that no-good Twilight Sparkle. Avoid the treacherous wheels! After a few levels of frantic teleporation, this game actually gets fairly hard - prepare to spend a little more time than you expect.

Fluttershy will mess you up if you drop her animal friends. Seriously, don't even think about it. However, this may prove difficult, as they just keep falling from the sky. Master the art of magical animal aerobatics in preparation for a high-pressure exhibition in front of several foreign diplomats!

Rainbow's Tail

Rainbow Dash has a serious need to collect magical floating orbs, but her balance is off. Way off. Can you master the challenges of one-button flight? This game can be frustrating on your first few tries - miss one sphere, and you're pretty much doomed - but gets much more satisfying when you finally get the knack of keeping Rainbow Dash airborne. An even harder sequel centered around the flight-challenged Scootaloo in commemoration of next week's episode would be pretty cool.

MLP:Online Shut Down

MLP:Online

If you have visited MLP:Online's website at all during November you would have noticed that the game was no longer available for download, with an announcement that the game was no longer under development. No details were given as to why this might have been the case, but today our suspicions were confirmed in that the project had been taken down by Hasbro for copyright reasons. All hope is not lost, however, as the developers have stated that they are going to begin work on a new MLP-related fangame, and will give details on how to help fairly soon.

Anyhow, in case you want to read the original announcement you can do so via this link or just go down and read beyond the break.

Just over a month ago, we released our first episode of our game. After a year and a half since the outset of the project, we were happy to present our first Episode to you. Though our servers suffered, we were pleased with the response and the great feedback we received!
Shortly after that–exactly 4 weeks prior to now–we received a complaint about copyright and trademark infringement. We initially dismissed this it was most likely submitted by some trolls, as they could be submitted anonymously by anyone through our CDN. However, we continued to look into it, and by the following Monday, found it to be very real.
Hasbro is not to be blamed here. As per U.S. Trademark law, as soon as an infringement comes to light, they are obligated to defend the trademark, or they will lose it. They had no choice in the matter, regardless of what they thought of the project or how it benefited them.
The matter was quite strict: there was little that we could do to work around it. We removed the download link and development was suspended. Discussions continued through the month, but it came down to one fact: MLP:Online had come to an end.

MLP:Online: April 2011-November 2012. RIP.

We apologize for the wait. The time that we were taking for our discussions and to announce this publicly was time-boxed. Salty will be posting a eulogy about the project.
But all hope is not lost. While MLPOnline is officially dead and buried, the team is mostly sticking together. Some took their leave due to real-life considerations, but about 75% of the old team remains. We've officially changed our name to Starlight Studios, as per a team vote last week. We have selected a new project. It is pony related, but otherwise we're keeping most of the details secret. It is our goal to have it completed by Bronycon 2013, though this may be ambitious.
You should expect to see something unveiled this summer.
EDIT: If you would like to help out with our new project, keep an eye out. I will be posting information about how to within the next 8 hours.

Kind of a bummer, eh? At least they're going to be working on another project, so at least there's that to look forward to.

Ok, I know it's tricky to stay angry at Rainbow Dash after this morning's episode - but in the season premiere, she knocked best pony flying in a jousting match. That sort of behavior is inexcusable.

Thanks to NutcaseNightmare, creator of Pony Wings, now you can make her pay! Um... if that's alright by you. You could also get knocked repeatedly in the mud. Engage in the sport of pegasi champions in this quick, sleek pony jousting game.

MLP RPG: The Elements of Harmony
Update 2: the link now points to a game version with some initial feedback implemented.

Man, you guys just keep cranking out these RPGs of epic dimensions! With 20-25 hours of advertised gameplay, Nurse Dashie has put together a game I'm not even ashamed to say I haven't finished yet. All you fans of pony games which you can really sink some time into: listen up! This might be just your cup of tea. More after the break!

A quick heads up after you download the game: read the ReadMe first! It contains important information on control, and how to get the game running - which I missed the first time through. Whoops.

Fluttershy used Snak!

The game doesn't get going immediately: in the tradition of classic RPGs such as Pokemon and Golden Sun, there's several mundane quests before you reach your first fight. However, once you get into the story, there's a lot here: you're gradually sucked in as you explore a massive world to recover the Elements of Harmony.

The game does suffer from 'RPG Maker graphics syndrome' - which is to say if you've seen the environment graphics from one game, you've seen them all. They're not lacking, but they get repetitive if you've seen them before. Then again, that's not the focus of the game.

The game allows you to play as all of the Mane 6, which is a treat. Additionally, some of the spell names and attack patterns are borrowed from Final Fantasy I, which is pretty cool. Fans of the game should check out the steam group!

Ponyhammer First Draft

Sadly, I'm a little lacking in Warhammer experience. Hopefully, that won't be true for long! AribanDeTyral's written up a lengthy ponified version inspired by the game, and he's looking for critique on his first draft. Find the rules above, break out the blind bags, and play some tabletop ponies!

Review: Stroll

I know what you're thinking: "A Pinkie Pie Platformer? I've played hundreds of those. Give it a rest, already." Well, hold your horses, so to speak. Just recently, Silly Mare Games released Stroll, which strives for an artsy, open-world feel rather than following in the hoofsteps of the rest of the genre. Does it find a successful niche, or is it just a bunch of walking around? You know where to click.

In the first few minutes of playing the game, I was struck by two things. First off, the game sounds like something you might play to fall asleep: rather than the customary bouncy electro remixes of pony songs, you're greeted by soft hoofsteps, mellow nature sounds, and the whistling wind. Walking around is a relaxing experience. However, I was initially a little put off by suddenly being dropped into the sandbox - I'm the kind of gamer who purposefully walks through a dungeon picking out the tunnels least likely to be the correct path, so I can make sure I haven't missed anything before continuing. Massive open worlds are intimidating.

After walking along for a few minutes, I began to get bored. I'd already found one of the ponies hidden in the game world, and I wasn't sure what to do next. The scenery was quickly becoming repetitive, and I had already been confronted by a couple of dead ends. If you're a fan of rapid-fire action games, this is probably not your cup of tea.

Lyra doesn't sleep the way one might expect her to.

Then, after scrambling my way up a mountainside and between several precarious floating platforms, I was rewarded with another hidden pony. At this point, the game's central mechanic became clear: find your way into the game's most secluded spots, and you'll be rewarded with ponies and other secrets. Now that I'd determined my challenge, I was hooked.

There are 11 ponies, and several more easter eggs, hidden around the surprisingly expansive map. Although there's nary a cutscene, the trek from Ponyville through the Everfree forest to the outskirts of Canterlot still feels like a journey. For those of you  who like more low-key adventuring, this game provides a meditative experience: I certainly didn't expect to spend as long with it as I did, although I'm not disclosing the amount of time.

Here's the bottom line: this game doesn't possess universal appeal, and some of you will quickly find you'd rather spend time on something else. However, it's unique among the fan games I've played, and I expect it to win itself many charmed fans. Final verdict: 7/10.

PonyCraft: Tainted Skies
It seems that the developers of PonyCraft have decided to completely rewrite their game in C++, which means that development will probably take much longer than it would have before. To make up for it though they've released a brief update video showcasing Twilight Sparke's new abilities and voice acting by the talented Rina-chan. Not much, but at least it's something, right?

Anyhow, you can find the video update below the break. I was originally going to put it at the top of the article but figured that you would like to see the game's fabulous logo in all its glory.
